Assignment 2 QUESTION 1 (25 marks) a) (10 marks) The Howe bridge truss is subjected to the loading shown. Determine the force in members HD, CD, and GD, and state if the members are in tension or compression.

b) (15 marks) Determine the force in members GF, GD, and CD of the truss and state if the members are in tension or compression.

QUESTION 2 (30 marks) a) (10 marks) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at pins A and C of the two-member frame.

b) (20 marks) For the truss shown above: i). Indicate on the truss diagram any zero force members ii). If you start at joint A, can you solve for the force in all members of the truss only using method of joints? Why, or why not? iii). Determine the force in every member of the truss.

The only zero force member in this truss is EL No, we are unable to solve for the force in all members of the truss by only using the methods of joints. Joints A,B & N can be solved like this however, in joints M & C there are more than 2 unknowns.
