Brittany Johnson Eng-122 Southern New Hampshire University December 13, 2020 Summative Assessment Part 2 The article “Me Talk Pretty One Day” shares the story of an older gentleman moving to Paris to learn the beautiful French language. You would think being he has been through school before and has some life experience that he would have no fears or insecurities. This is far from the case. He shared how his fear had “seasoned and multiplied with age”, and is now “twice as frightened (Sedaris, 1999). To knock him in the dirt even further his teacher belittles her students and even results to throwing things at them. As if moving to a foreign country is not challenging enough, now he had to deal with a teacher that never sees the good in her students. Some people may have given up and never achieved their dreams, but David used his sense of humor to push through and learn how to communicate with his teacher. Throughout the story David uses humor to push through the torment imposed on him by his teacher. This helps to keep the readers engaged and helps them to connect with the story. For example, in the article he shows his lack of knowledge of the language by taking random letter combinations to represent his teacher talking, "If you have not meismslsxp by this time, you should not be in this room. Has everybody apzkiubjxow (Sedaris, 1999)? When learning new things, it can be difficult for anyone. It is how you handle it that makes the difference. Second, he uses situations that people can relate to as another method to keep his readers engaged. For example, when he points out that his regular I.D. is not needed to show proof of age anymore and compares it to the uses of his student I.D. He can use his student I.D. for things such as discounts for movies and amusement parks which are things that really do not interest most adults. No longer will he be worrying about being carded for drinks. He will be focusing on surviving the next day of class.

Overall, the techniques he uses to keep his readers engaged I feel are effective and get his message across. To convey that hard work and determination are the keys to success can lead to a rather boring essay, but he kept it lighthearted regardless of the dark scenario he was facing. The only thing I may have added was how the teacher reacted when he was able to not only understand what she was saying but reply in a rather clever manner.
