3-2 Writing Plan “Me Talk Pretty One Day” After a third and analytical reading of David Sedaris’ “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, the author’s claim is for the audience to read a light and humorous story about how he managed to become fluent in French despite a hostile teacher who doesn’t appear to like people very much. His first impression of the teacher doesn’t do much to soothe Sedaris’ nerves he already had about the class. After the audience reads this article they will see just how abrasive the teacher is towards her students. What the teacher doesn’t know is that her horrendous style of teaching just pushes Sedaris to work harder and prove her wrong. There are definitely some new key points that jumped out after rereading the article again. The first one is the way the teacher seemed to enjoy shaming the Polish students; both named Anna, during a simple meet and greet exercise. She does so by mocking the first Anna’s hate for the mosquito and the second Anna’s love of sunshine. This leads to my next key point about how the way the teacher spoke to the Anna’s made Sedaris even more nervous. He was dreading his turn to introduce himself to the class and rightfully so. The teacher immediately mocked him for not knowing a typewriting is feminine in French. Later in the article the teacher tells Sedaris that she really hates him, which he of course he can’t help but to take personally. Yet, despite all of this, he is still able to excel in the class. Being that this article was published in GG, a men’s magazine, the target audience is men, probably in the 20-40 age group or so. But being that this is an established magazine, you will find it in waiting rooms everywhere. The second target audience, due to this, would be women in about the same age group. They may pick up the magazine and leaf through it while waiting, looking for something light to read. This article is bound to catch their eye. The title sticks out and makes you want to read on to find out the titles meaning. Sedaris chooses to keep this article light by using a humorous and anecdotal tone. He is able to take a dire situation and make it into something that keeps the reader engaged as they read. He does so by telling witty anecdotes about the teacher’s behavior and how the students respond. The article makes you want to read it until the end to see if Sedaris does in fact learn the French language. Sedaris is also able to make the teacher seem like a comical

character despite being so abrasive. All in all, he does a great job in what he is trying to achieve. Sedaris’ claim to this article is very strong. He starts the article off by explaining to the audience that despite being a grown man, he is still extremely nervous to be living abroad in France and learning a new language. He is able to express that his feelings are valid by the way he introduces the teacher into the story. He describes her as breezing into the room, speaking only in French, barking orders at the class. Throughout the article you read about the different abuses she puts on the class, even an accidental stabbing of a students eyelid with a freshly sharpened pencil. This make you believe that Sedaris will struggle with this class, that the teacher doesn’t seem to be very thrilled to be teaching in general. But despite all of this, Sedaris is able to persevere. By the end if the article he is able to understand the fluent French speaking of the teacher. Even if she was just hurling more insults at him....
