3-3 Milestone 2 My chosen archetype for my topic is centered around The Situational Archetype Theme. This archetype is commonly known as The Death/Rebirth Archetype. I would like to use Hindu Mythology for my final project and center it around Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu (The Hindu Trinity). I feel they represent The Death/Rebirth Archetype in the Cosmic Egg theme in Hindu Mythology. This myth is also called Hiranyagarbha.

Two Sources to use and the first one is my Secondary Resource: 1. Stookey, L. (2004). Thematic guide to world mythology. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO. Retrieved from http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/snhu-ebooks/detail.action?docID=497482 My Primary Resource I found on the Sacred Texts website from the Shapiro LibraryPrimary Sources-LIT229-World Mythology-Research Guide: 2. Wilkins, W. J. (1900). Hindu Mythology, Vedic and Puranic Retrieved from https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/hmvp/hmvp33.htm The two myths from two different cultures discussed using the cosmic egg motif for their Death/Rebirth archetype are in the two cultures of Hindu culture and China’s culture. Hindu Mythology and the Cosmic or Golden Egg: The Cosmic Egg in Hindu Mythology explains how the world was created and the afterlife. This myth is also called Hiranyagarbha. The God called Vishnu was the original God inside the Golden Cosmic Egg. Once Vishnu was born he called himself Brahma. Brahma means the one born alone because the Cosmic egg had no parents. When Brahma was born the egg separated and that is how we have a spiritual and physical realm (or Heaven and Earth). At the end of time, Brahma will become Shiva ( the

destroyer). When this happens everything will return back to the Cosmic egg for a long sleep and be born again also known as reincarnation. I believe this story functions for both themes, creation, and the afterlife, that we have studied. Chinese Mythology and the Cosmic Egg: The Chinese Creation myth contains the Cosmic Egg with a supreme being. This myth is similar to Hindu’s Cosmic Egg that contained Vishnu in the beginning. China’s God, or a supreme being, is called P’an Ku or Pangu. When the egg separated, the heavy parts of the egg floated down to form the Earth, and the lighter parts floated up to form Heaven. They are also known as Yin and Yang. This myth is only one of the six different creation myths from China.
