Her mother receives a letter from Alabama’s church pastor requesting a substitute of Marely’s baptismal record burned in church fire. It turns out that loving “pops” and “Momma” hid the biggest secret of her life. They weren’t her real parents but actually her aunt and that Uncle Jack is her biological father. After finding out the truth about her, it changes everything for Marley. Her beloved family suddenly turns into strangers and liars. She doesn’t know who to trust anymore. Certain truths come with big changes that one can’t handle but mostly, these changes are sometime for good and sometimes not. The truth is bitter indeed but how should one react to it is the main focus of the story. So, with the help of her parent’s unconditional love and her friends, Marley learns to let go of the past and accept her reality and just move on with life. Angela Johnson wrote a touching tale about self-discovery and deceit and what should one do after finding about the truth of their life (Johnson).
