1. Which story did you read? I read “The Boarded Window” by Ambrose Bierce. 2. Describe the physical setting of the story. Which words or descriptions contribute to the emotional setting or mood? What is the mood that results from the author’s use of description? This story is set in Ohio, 1820. The narrator describes the forest as “immense” and “unbroken”, which gives the reader a positive connotation of the forest. The cabin in the forest on the other hand is described as mysterious, for it only had one door alongside an odd boarded window. The mood that is created from the author’s use of description is a mysterious and suspenseful mood. 3. What is the theme? How do the final lines of the story influence the meaning or theme of the story? The theme is this story is dealing with death. In the final lines of the story, Murlock’s “dead” wife was attacked by a panther, but it had seemed that she broke free from the ties on her wrist and had bitten off the panther’s ear. This surprise ending showed that Murlock had mistakenly prepared his assumingly dead wife for a burial when in reality, she was still in a coma. This means that Murlock unknowingly contributed to her true death. 4. What techniques does the author use to create a surprise ending? In “The Boarded Window”, Ambrose Bierce uses flashback and foreshadowing to create a surprise ending and a suspenseful story. 5. Were you surprised by the twist? If so, why? If not, what should the author have done to make the ending more surprising and effective? Yes, I was surprised by the twist. It didn’t even cross my mind that Murlock’s wife could still be alive. 6. What was your experience in reading this story? Did it evoke fear or physically have an effect on you? Why or why not? I was very intrigued while reading this story. What intrigued me the most is that the author’s grandfather knew the old man that had lived in the cabin. Personally, this story didn’t evoke fear, it just made me interested and wanting to know more....
