Description

Welcome to Drugs Online 400961 Lauren Metcalfe

Hi, welcome to Drugs Online. My name is Lauren and I’m the Unit Coordinator for this unit. As you have hopefully guessed, this unit is delivered online. There are no face to face sessions for this unit. That does not mean that you can kick back and open the vUWS site the night before the exams. You will need to work through this unit, and I suggest working through some week by week so that you have the ability to clarify any questions you have, and do some study as you go rather than cramming. This is not an easy unit. There will be some tricky concepts for you to understand. There are no prerequisites so that means no assumed knowledge. Drugs online typically has students from different disciplines – business, policing, nursing, health sciences. There are no essential texts, all materials are provided in the modules. In Drugs Online, we use learning modules to cover all the learning materials. There are three modules and each one is designed to walk you through the semester to gain the best possible understanding of the content. The modules contain PowerPoint lectures and will also contain videos in addition to other literature which covers the learning outcomes for the unit. As you watch the videos and read the literature, you may find it useful to take some notes. Learning materials are not released weekly. The modules will run for around four weeks. Please check the Learning Guide for the teaching and learning activities. This unit deals with selected issues in drug use, misuse, and abuse. An introductory section discusses mechanisms of drug action in the body and their likely effects. Some topical areas include Drugs in Society, Illicit Drug Taking and Drug Taking in Sport, Anti-depressant and Weight Management Therapeutic Agents, and also the exploration of Complementary Alternative Medicine in Australian Society. Each modules learning materials are tested in a quiz at the end of the module. There are three quizzes. They are open for seven days and you have two attempts. The dates for the quiz opening and closing are found in the Learning Guide. Your best score will go towards you grade. Once the quiz is closed you’ll be able to access feedback on your answers and be directed to the learning materials that cover the question. Stop cramming and start learning. There is a lot of content to cover so give yourself the best opportunity to succeed in this unit. Work through the materials regularly. Try and be disciplined. The assessment quizzes are found in the unit’s vUWS site, in Assessment Zone 1. Quiz 1 and 2 are thirty questions and quiz 3 has forty questions. They total 50% of your total mark for the unit. If you miss all three quizzes you’ll attract an FNS grade. I encourage you not to miss any of these quizzes, to support your learning. If you experience a technical problem whilst attempting the online quiz, please email me at the time of the technical 1

difficulty so I’m aware. Please also email or call IT, who may be able to rectify the issue for you. The exam is delivered on campus in the scheduled examination weeks at the end of semester. The exam is 100 multiple choice questions. Closer to exam time, I’ll release a revision quiz to assist you in your exam preparation. I wish you the best of luck with the unit and hope you enjoy this semester.
