Statistics is defined as the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data, according to Wikipedia. Others know it as a branch of mathematics dealing with the collections, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data. After I reviewed the data in the article I read, “Alcohol Consumption Among First-Time Mothers and the Risk of Preterm Birth: A Cohort Study,” the statistic I would use to describe the population would be the maternal age at childbirth. In the study, the maternal ages were categorized as less than 20 years, 20-24 years, 25-29 years, 30-34 years, and 35 years and older. This shows the women in the study were between ages 20 and 35. This statistic best describes the population by using the ages of the participants. It also showed the age factor along with its relationship to the amount of alcohol consumed. My degree of choice is Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management. I’ve recently learned, statistics are widely utilized in any role in the Healthcare field. Therefore, with whichever career path I aim for, I will put statistics to use. The use of statistics as a healthcare professional aids in monitoring hospitals, as well as office practice conditions, and compares them to local competitors. Healthcare statistics uncover trends that have the ability to assist in the allocation of public and private funding and help with the determination of how research efforts should be focused. In order to be an effective administration, it is important that I have the knowledge on how to gather the data needed and how to convert that data into statistics to ensure my place of employment is being run as effectively as possible. My ideal goal is to run a facility and/or group home for special needs individuals. This has been a passion of mine because my firstborn has special needs. She is 32 and still lives at home with me. She was diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy since infancy. It is hard work, but the reward is greater. Knowing these individuals are loved and well cared for, would make it all worthwhile.
