Kohlberg's Cognitive-Developmental Theory is based on the idea that a child's gender awareness evolves with time. I have a few transgendered friends, and the best way to help them is to understand what they are going through, either via research or by asking the right questions. Be there for them; they might not have a supporting family or a lot of understanding coworkers, and they can be dealing with harassment, so being consistent and just there for them when they need you can go a long way. Finally, if they require assistance, assisting them in locating the resources they require to feel like themselves is something that might be appreciated if they do not know where to begin seeking.

Coming into your own, whether you're nonconforming or conforming to standard gender stereotypes, may be an extremely demanding process. It is insurmountably easier to navigate selfexploration when you have a strong foundation in emotional intelligence.
