Kristin Howard 6.28.19 The Inexorable System of Karl Marx Chapter 6 of The Worldly Philosophers admittedly started out a bit dry. Once I started getting to familiar names such as the Manifesto and Karl Marx, my interest suddenly sparked. Before continuing, I thought back to my high school social studies classes trying to remember what I could about the Manifesto and recalled that it was pretty much a critique of capitalism. I appreciated how the descriptions were back and forth between Marx and Engels in the beginning. This allowed for an easy compare/contrast, rather than reading about one and having to go back when reading about the second. I also appreciated the breakdown of different things he did in each country, rather than mixing it up. The idea of a superstructure and class structures were ones that were all too familiar to me. The statement “one accumulates or one gets accumulated” on page 156 is a good way to quickly summarize the environments entrepreneurs work in, still today. I’ve heard a lot about Karl Marx, but I cant recall ever hearing about Das Kapital. Just from the reading today, I am interested in the idea of labor-power and subsistence wage. I found the concept to be a bit confusing after reading it once. After I wrote it down and reread it a couple of times, it made sense. I think it is interesting how some of his predictions have come true and others haven’t. It makes me wonder if we may be moving in a direction where more of what he predicted will start to happen.

I am still a bit confused about the dialectical materialist theory and how they all tie together. It seemed as if the reading talked about if from different aspects....
