Values of Human Createive Expression...

Description

How do you think aspects of contemporary culture have influenced the humanities and creative expression? Largely, I think that creative expression in the humanities has deteriorated some through contemporary cultures of today in the sense were authenticity is being lost. An example that comes to mind is “Autotune”. Due to advancements in technology, entertainers are now able to alter their voices in ways that would not be genuinely possible without the creation of this device. Artist can perform songs that appear to be in perfect tune when the originally recorded track could have been slightly off pitch. Additionally, another technological advancement that falters authenticity across an array of social media platforms, is the use of filters. When people post pictures of themselves on social media, very rarely are they posting an unfiltered photo. Even our standalone cellular devices allow for filters to be applied to our photos before they are even uploaded to social media for picture perfect “selfies”. An illustration similar was discussed in the Sheets article, “Discovered After 70, Black Artists Find Success, Too, Has Its Price”. The example of “Mr. Binion who was compelled to reject one dealer who he felt patronized him as they tried coaching him on how to speak to curators and the press. “Nobody's going to tell me what to say about my work,'' said Mr. Binion.'' [ CITATION Hil19 \l 1033 ]. It seems as our technology advances our creative expressions diminish just a little with each innovation.

What do you see as the main value of human creative expression for contemporary culture? As a society, I feel like our values have shifted with each transformation that we have faced socially. Contemporary culture is no different and with it has come an abundance of global influences. Through social media we have gained exposure to cultural diversities that would not otherwise be so readily available to us. Having an instant connection with people around the world has driven a commonplace experience to obtain popularity. Especially, in the younger generation who is depending upon the works of social media which demonstrate their creative expressions though “likes”, “shares” and “retweets”. This need for instant gratification is proving that the creation of lasting innovations such as artifacts, are no longer the focus since our society has become increasing obsessed with instantaneous recognition instead of lasting recollection.
