8-1 Project 3: Final Reflection Submission

A social scientist would likely be interested in why there are predominately men in the lead roles of these ads and how the ads draw them in. Does targeting specific genders in ads make people of those specific genders feel drawn in by seeing similarities within themselves?

Would members of the same gender feel as drawn in if traditional gender stereotypes were reversed and their bias challenged? The answers to this question can be important in learning how advertisements and presentation in media can influence men, young men, and boys. The modeled behavior in advertisements demonstrates to many men how they are perceived by society and then they follow this behavior, as it is seen as what is expected by society. This is not always in a positive light, therefore learning how this effects males, can help change and shape more positive representation in the future. In this course, we learned that implicit biases may make us believe things on an unconscious level. In the Schlage ad, for instance, we see the man looking for a new lock for his home after a messy breakup. The implicit bias is that men are strong, so seeing a man wanting a strong lock would make sense to seemingly boost his ego. The Women’s Room ad leads us to believe that women are the only victims of domestic violence, yet this is untrue. Men are commonly silent victims of this, but the societal bias of men being strong does not allow easy belief that they could be victims also. Advertisers use these gender stereotypes along with social bias to influence the consumer to purchase their product or support their cause. Social science inquiry advances and evolves over time due to the cyclical nature of social science. Every question answered will then lead to more questions and answers. With the quickly changing advances in social media platforms, the way these questions are asked would then change based on the application. For example, the way inquiry would be conducted on Facebook could be a text post with a survey attached, while an inquiry on an app such as Tik Tok or Snapchat would likely be in video form with a link to a survey.

Our understanding of social science concepts is important to continue to develop and expand in the field as we ask more questions, collect the answers, and then raise yet more questions to be answered. This cycle builds upon itself for a deeper study of humanity and society. As our use of technology progresses, it will play an important role in enhancing the ability to reach more subjects to study and develop more questions to ask....
