INQUIRY PORTFOLIO PROJECT: FINAL SUBMISSION TEMPLATE Name: ______________________________________ This course-long portfolio, developed over multiple weeks, will give you the opportunity to engage with a particular research topic while utilizing the various steps of the inquiry process. Once you have completed each week of the project, you will compile each step from Weeks 2-6 into this template and submit it in the link named “Inquiry Portfolio Project Final Submission”. Remember that you are compiling previous work here, and failure to complete each step may result in failure for the assignment.

Week Two

Topic Selection

Original Submission: How different forms of genetic defects spread throughout Animal Populations and how they affect it. This affects me on a personal level because I own two animals with birth defects, one being deaf and the other being born with hips that required surgery to be fixed. This relates to my field of study because I am going into the Zoology field. The dangers of inbreeding could be brought out to the public, it could save many owners emotional heartache and stop many animals from potentially suffering. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to start creating my topic: I would be much more specific and detailed on how the defects spread throught the population and how to combat them.

Week Three

Development of Research Question

Original Submission: How do different genetic defects affect pets and owner’s well being? Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to develop my research question: I would have changed the question to be more specific on defects and not focusing on the owner’s as much.

Notes about Results (think in terms of a search and source’s quality, relevance, and purpose – keep in mind that you must clearly identify 4 distinct sources (two books and two articles) that might be potential sources for your research and inquiry process) Write a clear entry, using academic voice and style, to describe your process and results. Be sure to review the assignment’s instructions for guidance. It is a book that gives valuable insight to dog Genetics. Goes into detail about inherited and other disorders

Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin looking for sources: I would have used more than just the Jerry Falwell database to get more search results.

Week Five Process Findings Original Submission: I picked these sources because they went into great detail about the effects of inbreeding on different types of Dogs and all of the issues they may cause. I finalized these sources because they provided great insight about different disorders. This connects well because my research question is The effects of birth defects on Dogs and Owners. These sources pertain to me and my education mainly because my major is Zoology and I have two animals with birth defects. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin critiquing my sources: I would changed my sources because they weren’t as useful for the paper as I thought they were.

Week Six

Statement of Intent

INQR 101

Original Submission: This researcher's goal is to help bring to light the dangers of inbreeding among animals, as it may lead to many birth defects, some of which are fatal. As an owner of two animals with birth defects, this researcher takes the dangers of inbreeding seriously. Further, inbreeding might be an ethical violation, as it causes many animals unnecessary pain. It is this researcher's goal to study Zoology and potentially become a veterinarian. Thus, it is this researcher's desire to bring the perils of inbreeding to people’s attentions, as it can help decrease animal suffering.. Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to explain my statement of intent: I could go more in depth on what I plan if I become a Vet and how I could help with this issue or go further in dept on how I could bring it to the people's eyes...
