Academic overview Unit learning outcomes On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to: 1. classify costs dependent on the context and purpose of related decisions 2. analyse cost behaviour and estimate costs

3. design, use and evaluate costing systems 4. analyse and use cost information relevant to decision-making

5

5. develop written communication skills; and apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to demonstrate the acquisition of a comprehensive knowledge of the topics covered in ACW2220.

Teaching approach This unit will be taught as a two-hour lecture and one-hour tutorial each week for 12 weeks. The lecture sessions will cover significant points of the topics (see Unit Schedule) and may be used to discuss a number of the set problems. It is not intended that the staff member will cover every aspects of each topic, but rather provide a framework of the important theoretical concepts and practical issues. Given this framework, students are expected to attend all lecture and tutorial sessions and participate actively. In order to participate and gain maximum benefits from the sessions, all tutorial questions set for each week, are to be attempted before the tutorial for that week. At times in the lecture and tutorial sessions, the staff members will invite students to raise and discuss relevant issues and areas of concern. Students should take this opportunity, particularly in tutorials to clarify areas of difficulty and to contribute actively to the discussion of the model answers to the set of weekly questions. Students are expected to spend additional private study time and access the recommended readings, which are listed in this guide. In addition to the recommended readings and sets of weekly questions, a number of past examinations, together with model answers, are provided on MOODLE. These resources enable students to develop a mastery of the topics covered by the unit. To ensure a high probability of completing this unit successfully, students need to approach it in a systematic way. At a minimum this should involve:

● ● ● ● ●

reading the prescribed material prior to the session; preparing solutions to each set of questions prior to the sessions; attending sessions and participating in discussions of model answers; reviewing material from other references from time to time; and attempting relevant past examination questions.

Students should note that this is a demanding unit. Successful completion of this unit is dependent on mastering the various concepts and techniques presented and will require all of the time commitment outlined. Students will be provided with Powerpoints, pre-reading materials, and alternative reading textbooks in the MOODLE. Alternatively, they can meet the staff members for consultation.

Recording of lectures 6

This unit will have lectures recorded. These recordings will be available to current students. In the event that there is an equipment failure and the lecture is not recorded in part or in full, no alternative recording will be provided. The Chief Examiner may determine a part or parts of lecture unsuitable for recording.

7

Unit schedule For units with on-campus classes, teaching activities are normally scheduled to start on the hour (teaching will commence on the hour and conclude 10 minutes prior to the scheduled end time). Students should note that the program outlined below is a guide to the material to be covered in this unit and not a definitive statement of when that material will be covered. Specific details relating to the timing will be discussed in class.

Nature of Contribution - Preparation and Participation

9 - 10

Outstanding Contributor The comments made by you revealed exceptional preparation and the contribution provided a substantive foundation for furthering fruitful class discussions. If you were absent from the class, the tutorial would have lacked the desired student directed learning.

8-6

Good Contributor

11

The comments made by you revealed thorough preparation and your contribution provided some useful insight into the topic. At times you even lead the class discussions. If you were absent from the class, the quality of student initiated debate would have significantly diminished. 5-3

Standard Contributor The comments made by you revealed adequate preparation and at times your contribution aided class discussions. However, your contribution was not consistent. At times the comments you made were well argued and/or persuasive, yet on other occasions they were unsubstantiated and/or illogical. If you were absent from the class, the quality of the student initiated debate would have suffered.

2-1

Poor Contributor You rarely contributed to class discussions, it is extremely difficult to assess your level of preparation and the likely contribution you might have made to the class discussions

0

Non-Contributor The comments made by you revealed a lack of preparation and negatively impacted upon class discussions. Additionally, your contributions failed to provide a constructive lead to class discussions and invariably disrupted the flow of debate.
