Answer each of the following questions within this document in your own words. Word counts are a recommendation only to guide you in the level of detail required in your answer. There are no penalties for going outside this word count aside from answers which become irrelevant (too long) or omit key details (too short). Irrelevant or superfluous information will not be marked favourably. EG answer the questions specifically, and do not write everything you know about a broader topic. You may use any resources at your disposal. You may collaborate with your peers. You MAY NOT post questions or answers on public forums such as Facebook groups, discussion boards, or online Q&A pages such as Reddit or Yahoo Answers. Your answers should be based on the information provided to you within this subject. You should not need to seek extra information from online sources to complete your answers. Details from sources beyond the subject resources (lectures, workshops, online modules) will not gain extra marks. Your completed document (for the actual test, not the practice one) will be uploaded through Turnitin to ensure your answers are your own. Plagiarism (copying each other’s answers, allowing someone to copy your answer, copying information from the internet or other sources, or writing a collective answer which multiple people copy and paste) will NOT BE TOLERATED. Evidence of plagiarism on your paper is considered academic misconduct, and will jeopardise your enrolment at the University.

YOU MUST COMPLETE THE BELOW DECLARATION FOR YOUR TEST PAPER TO BE MARKED. I, (YOUR FULL NAME) , have read and understand the information listed above. I understand that posting answers or questions on public forums, answering questions on public forums, submitting plagiarized work, or allowing others to plagiarise my own work are acts of academic misconduct and will result in formal academic misconduct hearings which may result in 1) severe penalties to my marks, 2) unenrollment from the subject, 3) suspension from the University of Melbourne, or 4) termination of my enrolment. I understand that regardless of the outcome, evidence of academic misconduct will become part of my permanent record at the University of Melbourne, and could appear on my final transcript. ☐ I agree (click box)

1. Consider a hypothetical ion, Ga- with an equilibrium potential of -40mV. a. Describe how changes in membrane permeability for Ga - would affect membrane potential. Ensure you describe chemical and electrical gradients for the ion and briefly explain your reasoning. (5 marks; 75-150 words)

b. If a neurotransmitter receptor was a ligand-gated Ga - channel, describe the postsynaptic effects that would occur when the receptor was affected by the neurotransmitter. You do not need to repeat information you provided in part a. (3 marks; 20-40 words)

c. Describe a way that this same receptor could be inhibitory in some neurons, and excitatory in others. (5 marks; 100-175 words)

2. Describe the role of Ca2+ in skeletal muscle twitch, summation, and tetanus. Ensure you describe the factors which influence cytosolic Ca2+ concentration, and how this impacts contractile force. (4 marks; 200-300 words)

3. If SERCA pump activity were inhibited by ~25%, how would this affect the necessary action potential frequency required to achieve tetanus? You do not need to include any numbers or calculations in your answer. (3 marks; 40-80 words)

4. Consider the following hypothetical hormone pathway and related feedback loops:

Consider a patient with elevated bamboo cravings. The patient is not on any medication. Pandasol has a half-life of 4 days. a. List three potential causes of this due to hormone hypersecretion, and for each cause list how you would expect related tropic and non-tropic hormone levels to be affected and why. (2 marks; 75-100 words)

b. List two potential causes for this not related to hypersecretion, and briefly (1-2 sentences) justify your reasoning. (3 marks; 100-150 words)

5. Describe how both branches of the autonomic nervous system affect the function of the gastrointestinal tract during the fight or flight response. Describe the neurotransmitters, hormones, and receptors involved in each branch, and how they affect gastrointestinal function and blood flow. (5 marks; 200-250 words)...
