Summary

In this assignment I critiqued a speech given by Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria to address cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy where African Americans were targeted with written racial slurs on a message board....

Description

In this speech Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria addressed the cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. African Americans were targeted with racial slurs written on a message board. As the superintendent Silveria took immediate action in addressing the situation as he should. This is leadership at its greatest, he said a mouth full, and it needs to be said again and again until people take heed to it. Unfortunately, some have not grown enough to love this world and everyone in it no matter the race or gender. People have been mistreated for ages in this country and not just African Americans. Jay Silveria sated some good points; at the beginning of the speech he says “that the appropriate response for horrible language and horrible ideas is a better idea” which is better way to say every action has an equal and opposite reaction. For every interaction there is an equal or opposite reaction. He also says “the power of the 4000 cadets, staff, and people as a diverse group the power that they all come from different walks of life, all different parts of the country, all races, all backgrounds, gender all make up, all upbringing, the power of that diversity coming together makes them that much powerful that’s a much better idea then small thinking and horrible ideas”. A group of people coming together to make a stand has way more power than someone standing alone, that’s why us as a people need to come together as one and not as different genders, different races, different socioeconomic classes etc. It was a very moving speech and I agree with it!

African-American cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado were targeted this week with racial slurs. Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria, the school's superintendent, made a powerful speech to the academy with an important message. This is leadership at it's best. He says what should be said and needs to be said again and again until people stop acting on their petty feelings. To write things against people outside of their rooms is cowardly, to say the least. Also it seems like they do it for a thrill, or for fun. Unfortunately, there are too many people who don't grow up enough to love their world. These are the jerks who shoot and kill little animals for fun. This is the bad side of human nature. Silveria is showing the good side. People have been mistreated in this country for a long time and not just black people. Therefore, I thank you Lt. General Silveria for addressing an issue that should have been dealt with and abolished many, many, many years ago for decent people who just want to live, be safe, be productive, and be treated with dignity. Thankyou general for empathy, your sincerity, and compassion, and for having the courage to speak up and tell people this behavior will not and should not be tolerated....
