BSED-III Shu Ting 1. What was your inspiration in writing the poem ‘’Also All”? 2. What was your favorite part, and your least favorite part, of this poem? 3. What sort of influence do you hope to instill among your readers? Bei Dao 1. Why do you think that during the period of 1980-89 the authorities allowed your poetry and that of your fellow poets to be published? 2. Why do you think that your poetry was threatening to the authorities? 3. Was it intentional that your poem “All” has a pessimistic and stressing vibe? Why did you use this technique in writing the poem? Comparison and contrast of the poem “All” and “Also All” “Also All” is a response to misty poet Bei dao’s work “All.” While Bei Dao is pessimistic and is going on about how “everything is fated” and that all the good in the world is oppressed – Shu Ting dismisses this outlook with an optimistic response. She argues that misfortunes in our lives are invariable however, you should always look at the bright side of things and bring positivity out of the negativity. Just like the concept of Yin and Yang, where there is a balance between the good and bad. Bei Dao makes use of “human experiences” and logic in his poem while Shu Ting uses nature more as an example and metaphor throughout her poem. I think that Shu Ting made an excellent response to refute Bei Dao’s pessimism and would highly likely encourage and inspire a person to overcome what seems to be impossible and become more than just ordinary citizens. Although Bei Dao was also correct in his viewpoint, it’s Shu Ting’s thought- provoking words that overpowers his negativity. When the world goes upside-down, you don’t just sit and do nothing, we struggle and strive to face our challenges face-forward. The bad stuff will always be there, but there will also be some good around, and hope is there for us to cling to....
