Antiulcer agent, hypophosphatemics CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action In GI tract it will bind to phosphate. This will neutralizes gastric acid and pepsin is inactivated.

Therapeutic Use Helps heals ulcers and decreased pain with ulcers or gastric hyperacidity.

Complications Constipation and hypophosphatemia.

Medication Administration Hypophosphatemia PO (Adults): 1.9–4.8 g (30–40 mL of regular suspension or 15–20 mL of concentrated suspension) 3–4 times daily. Antacid PO (Adults): 500–1500 mg (5–30 mL) 3– 6 times daily.

Contraindications/Precautions Severe abdominal pain of unknown cause, hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia.

Interactions

Nursing Interventions For gastric pain assess location, duration, character and precipitating factors. LABS: monitor serum phosphate and calcium levels and gastric secretions

TCA's, chorpromazine, iron salts, isoniazid, digoxin, or flouroquinolones absorption can be decreased. Salicylate blood levels may be decreased. Quinidine, mexiletine and amphetamine levels can be increased. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness A decrease in GI pain/irritation or serum phosphate levels. Can increase pH of gastric secretions.
