Expected Pharmacological Action Blocks the stimulation of beta1 adrenergic receptors.
Therapeutic Use Decreased blood pressure and heart rate. Decreased frequency of attacks of angina pectoris. Decreased cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization in patients with heart failure.
Complications Bradycardia, decreased cardiac output, AV block, rebound myocardium excitation.
Medication Administration Oral and IV use Give orally for HTN Absorption of metoprolol may be enhanced with food .
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindications: Sinus bradycardia. Moderate to severe heart failure. Cardiogenic Shock Precautions: Patients with HF controlled by digitalis and diuretics. Renal or liver disorders.
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Monitor heart rate. Monitor for signs of heart failure and report to provider. Teach patient not stop beta blocker suddenly .
Use with other antihypertensive drugs may increase this effect . Antacids may decrease absorption. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Absence of chest pain. Absence of cardiac dysrhythmias. Control of heart failure manifestations.
