AN ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD DIANA ROSE I. ORILLA STEM 11-08, Senior High school Department Polytechnic University of the Philippines

“It’s more fun in the Philippines”, indeed it was, because of the hospitality of Filipinos, the great and breath-taking places here and many more. The Philippine literature started before the Spaniards colonized our country. Our ancestors were called Pagans because the Spaniards thought they didn’t have their own system of writing for they did not understand Baybayin – system of writing of our natives. The Literature on Pre-colonial Period was more on oral, like myths, folktales, legends, songs, rites, chants, fables, folk songs and proverbs. When a disaster happens, our ancestors thought it was because God is punishing them for their sins and because of those thoughts, they formulated stories and that was the origin of Oral literature. Before, those stories were believed as a reason because there’s no scientific explanation about it. Our natives were very good at creating epics – long poems/stories about the legends; folk epics are the most significant literary pieces in the oral literature of our country. One of the famous folk epics is Biag ni Lam-ang, it was about a born baby who’s very strong and named himself after being born, he was said to be the strongest man and can defeat all his enemies. It is one of the examples of the works of our ancestors; it describes our Philippine literature and shows the characteristics of it. The characteristics of our literature are in the form of songs or chant; includes our beliefs, traditions and uniqueness of our natives; mostly the stories are about the heroes or powerful characters. Our epics became known because it was passed from one person to another then to the next generation. Our Philippine literature before we were colonized is amazing because its uniqueness catches the interest of the readers, even those tourists who visits here. Whenever they hear our native or epic stories, they would listen attentively and be amazed by it. Yet our own people won’t accept it just because its old and boring to hear or read, they would choose to read stories abroad than to study our Philippine literature. Especially in our generation, technologies are world widely used. Hearing our native stories makes us proud of our own literature, which we don’t need to depend on our colonizers language just to be known in this world. We have our own kind of ability and strength, and that is our literature....
