Nursing Care -Administer ferrous sulfate, iron -Identify and treat underlying cause -Blood transfusions if prescribed -Drug therapy i.e. erythropoetin or vitamin supplements. -O2 therapy to stabilize the patient.

IV iron preparations are at risk for an allergic reaction. GI side effects may occur with taking iron such as heartburn, constipation and diarrhea.

Oral iron should be taken about 1 hr before meals unless contraindicated.

Client Education -Dietary and lifestyle changes such as increasing iron and Vitamin C in diet and smoking cessation. -To balance activities with rest to prevent fatigue. -Iron is best absorbed in an acidic environment so take 1 hr before meals.
