Description

Unit 34: 2D Animation Production Media Genre’s In the media industry, animation is used in many different ways. For example, Animation can be used for entertainment such as television cartoons or movies. Animation is often used in companies commercially for advertisements in which it will be used to attract an audience and potential customers.

Persistence of Vision Persistence of Vision is a theory in which we see motion that is being processed by our brains. For example if we see a few of images which indicate the different stages of a man walking we will be able to process each different image. If those images then get shown at a high speed, it will look like the man is actually walking but it is actually the different images.

Animation Techniques 2D Film - 2D animation is used in many different ways. For example 2D was used in TV Series (Cartoons) and films. 2D Animations were being in released in the theatres for example The Lion King, a 2D animated film produced by Walt Disney and released in theatres.

2D Series – 2D Animation was also being used for TV Series, such as cartoons that appeal to children. An example of a 2D animated series was Tom and Jerry, this was produced by Hanna and Barbara.

Clay animation Clay animation, which is also known as Claymation is a form of stop motion animation. Stop motion animation is where each frames are recorded (Still images) and then put together to create an animation. With Claymation, the same process is used the images are taken of clay models rather than drawn pictures which then creates the illusion of the clay models moving when really somebody is changing the structure of the clay models slightly each time a different frame has been captured.

Wallace and Gromit, which was a Television program that was produced by clay animation.

Inventions Zoetrope – A Zoetrope is a form of animation which was discovered by William George Horner. A Zoetrope is basically a drum without with slits down the side whilst the inside contains still images. The drum is then gets rotated around fast which then causes the illusion of motion

in the images. William Horner was born in 1786 and died in 1837 and in his time he was a British Mathematician and he invented the Zoetrope in 1834.

CinematographA Cinematograph was a device that was invented by the Lumiére Brothers in 1895 in France. The Device was a motion picture camera which was used to film, project and print. The Cinematograph was actually used for the showing of the first cinema film in 1985. The device was not electrically powered as it was hand cranked.

Animation Software’s

Adobe Flash – Flash is a program that is used to create 2D Vector Animation. It can be used for Web Design, Application development and Interactive and Video projects. Flash is well known as a simple animation development program but can be used to make professional looking animations using the tools provided. Adobe After Effects Adobe After Effects is an animation program which is industry standard and can be used to create 2D and 3D motional graphics and visual effects. This program is very advanced and can be very complicated to use with is wide variety of tools and features. Anime Studio Anime Studio is program in which is used by professional animators. Anime Studio is a simple easy-to-use program but is very efficient in the development of 2D and 3D animations. Norman McLaren Norman McLaren was born in 1914 and died in 1987 and was a pioneer in animation and filmmaking. Over the years of his work, he used techniques such as:     

He inspired a lot of people by playing many roles in the industry such as Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Animator, Composer and inventor etc. The names of some of his work were: “Seven Till Five” Stylized documentaries. “Love on the wing” Created by drawing on a film strip. “Dots” and “Stars and Stripes” which he created when he immigrated to the United States to make this abstract films. “Neighbors” Which he received an Oscar for making. “Blinkity blank” Which was created in 1955 After he died, a full length film on his life and work was created and it was called “Creative Process: Norman Mclaren”.

Len Lye Len Lye was born in 1901 and died in 1980 and he was from New Zealand and was known as an artist for his experiments on films and Kinetic Sculptures. He was aspired with motion and created “Motion Sketches” which were abstract drawings that he made into motion.

Some of his work were: Tusalava (1929), Peanut Vendor (1933) and A colour box (1935) etc.

Disney Disney is a multinational company that was created by Walt Disney which then created animated films and television shows such as Mickey Mouse (1928), Snow White and the seven dwarves (1937) and Fantasia etc.

Hanna – Barbera Productions H-B Production Company was an American animation studio that created animations and was well known on for its television shows such as Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, The Smurfs etc. The company was founded by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The company was bought by Turner Broadcasting System and was then merged with Time Warner which the company then became subsidiary of the Warner Bros in 1996.

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc The Warner Bros is a media company which develops film and televised animations. The Company was founded by four brothers, Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack L Warne. The Waner Bros are very well known for creating “Looney Toons”....
