Term F 2018 AP/KOR 3600 Contemporary Korean Culture I: Identity, Society and Culture Course Description This course introduces students to contemporary Korean culture, identity, and society and to help students develop a dynamic understanding of contemporary Korean culture. It seeks to help students develop a dynamic understanding of contemporary Korea by taking an interdisciplinary approach to cultural and socio-political issues of Korean society. Over the last five decades, Korea has undergone a rapid societal and cultural change. This new development and many other social changes will be explored in terms of Korean society and cuisine, gender, and identity issues. This course combines lectures with faceto-face or online discussions of readings. The course format is blended; the course activities are performed in both face-to-face and online modes. Bonus mark: participating in movie screening in October: 0.5%

 Students can earn a maximum of 100 points accumulated from the five grading components.  Participation/Attendance: Your participation will be graded based on 1) weekly online group discussion forum (3 points x 8 weeks); and 2) peer evaluation of group presentations (1 points) o For the online discussion forum participation, after reviewing online lecture and the assigned readings you are required 1) to post one discussion forum question by 11:00 pm on Tuesday, 2) reply to two group members’ questions by 11:00 pm on Thursday. Please make a post in 150-250 words. The Forum link will be

disabled after the deadline. The rating rubric can be found on the course web page. o The instructions on the group presentation rating will be provided.  Group Presentation: Each group will be responsible for preparing for a 20-25 minute presentation on a specific topic regarding “stereotypes about Korean culture/people/society.” In order to dispute or support the selected topic, you must collect information and data through library research, online research, and interviews/surveys with people. You should submit your topic online by 11:00 pm on Tuesday September 19, 2017. Your presentation date will be assigned upon instructor’s approval of your topic. Presentations must be given the day they are scheduled. Grading rubrics will be provided on the course web page.  Two Tests: Each test will check students’ comprehension of lectures, screenings, and course readings. The test will consist of identifications, short answer questions, True or False, and multiple-choice questions. Grading Schemes Your final course grade will be based on the results of the following in conformity with the YorkU’s grading schemes: 90-100 80-89 75-79 70-74 65-69 60-64 55-59 50-54 49-50 0-49

Term F 2018 4. Any student who asks for a grade raise (for any reasons including expelling from a program, loosing a scholarship, etc) will get his/her grade lowered by one grade. Extra works will not be granted for raising a grade.
