APES – Chapter One Notes Studying the State of Our Earth Earth’s Organization: -
Organisms/Species: Breed and produce fertile offspring. Population: Same species in same area. Community: Different population in the same area. Ecosystem: All organisms (biotic) particular place; includes nonliving (abiotic) surroundings of areas. Biome: Group of ecosystems with the same climate (temperature and precipitation) and similar communities. Biosphere: All portions of the planet where life exists (land, water, air, atmosphere).
Environmental Science Offers Important Insights Into Our World & How We Influence It: -
Fracking: Hydraulic Fracture for CH₄ (Methane/natural gas) o Not conclusively linked to ground water contamination. o Linked to methane leaks into the atmosphere o Uses an exhaustive amount of water (treated water)
-
Basic Vocab o Environment- a sum of all the conditions surrounding us that influence life. o Environmental science- the field that looks at interactions among humans and nature. o System- a set of interacting components that influence one another by exchanging energy or materials. o Ecosystem- the living and non-living components of a particular place on earth. o Biotic- the living part of the Earth (animals, plants) o Abiotic- the non-living part of the Earth (soil, air, water) o Environmental studies- Includes environmental science, the study of interactions among human systems and those found in nature along with other subjects such as environmental policy, economics, literature, and ethics.
-
What is the difference between environmentalism (environmentalist) and environmental studies or environmental science? o Environmentalism is a social movement aimed to protect the environment whereas environmental studies/science is a science where it is just a scientific approach to studying and categorizing natural phenomenon's

Humans Alter Natural Systems: -
-
Humans manipulate their environment more than any other species. o Bad: extinction of a species, changing chemistry of soil, air water. o Good: Native Americans preserving the great plains. Population growth has increased both the rate and scale of global environmental impact sustainability....
