Description

Apple Questions: 1. Analyze the personal computer industry. Why, historically, has Apple struggled in PCs? 1. The personal computer industry consists of the business market, education market, artistic enterprises market, and personal computing market. Apple, while they have almost 50% of the education and artistic enterprises market, has almost no penetration into the business market. This is most likely why they struggle in the PC department. The business market runs primarily on Windows OS computers, servers, and other devices. Almost every computer in the business market is made by a company other than Apple. This accounts for a significant amount of revenue for other PC manufacturers. 2. Why has Apple been so successful of late? What do you attribute this success to? 1. I think that Apple has been successful as of late due to the continuous innovation. The iPhone and iPad have revolutionized the way we view and receive data, and other companies continually attempt to imitate it. The iPhone has revolutionized communications and the “smartphone” took off after its release and has continued to hold a market lead. 3. Is there a “systematic” approach to innovation at Apple? If yes, how would characterize it? Can it be imitated? If no, why not? 1. Yes, there is definitely a systematic approach to innovation at Apple. Their approach from the start has been to improve the computer experience for the end user. Whether that be understanding what a personal computing system can do for the everyday user – and making the PC much less complicated so that everyone has an opportunity to use it. They do not innovate based on what is popular or what looks best, they innovate from the inside out. They discover what will make their computing systems more efficient and more effective, and what new products can be invented to facilitate this. They do not view problems as something to be fixed temporarily, instead, they view them as “moving targets,” something that a solution can be built upon. Their approach to innovation can be imitated, however, it would be difficult. The innovation culture within Apple is so deeply engrained that is has been the same since the creation of the company. Steve Jobs agrees that while there is no formal “system” for innovation, the process includes employees being so passionate about innovating that they discuss new ideas at all hours. To replicate this, companies would be forced to think outside the box, as Apple does, and to completely reinvent their corporate culture in regards to innovation. Instead of following the market trend or imitating popular items, creating new, distinct products is necessary. 4. Imagine that Apple’s management is running your organization-or the last organization that you worked for. What would that be like? What would change? What obstacles would be encountered? What would it be like to work there?...
