Formal Analysis; Judgement of Hunefer Before Osiris Aliyah Jarvis 101201214 ARTH 1100 Art and Society: Prehistory to the Renaissance Morgan Currie Double check Chicago title page format.

2 The ancient Egyptian art piece Judgement of Hunefer Before Osiris, created between 1290–1280 BCE, is taken from The Book of the Dead and consists of paint on a papyrus paper scroll. The artwork itself, which is organized horizontally, can be read from left to right. It displays Hunefer, an important Egyptian figure cloaked in white, being brought in by the This information should be cited, even if it is from class you still need to cite where the information was from to avoid academic dishonesty.

unefer’s heart is weighed on a large golden scale Not only does the usage of bold lines, vivid colour and detail throughout the entire painting hint toward this piece being of high importance and value to Egyptian culture, it also gives the viewer a sense of higher power. You don’t need a space in between paragraphs.

Along the top of the art piece is a repeated pattern of witnesses to the judgement dressed in a repeated colour pattern of green, white, gold, and white again, with Hunefer kneeling in front of them. Each witness is simple in design, their bodies curved into a cross-legged sitting position. A similar colour pattern continues along the top of the page on Osiris's canopy, keeping the two different elements of the painting together. The composition of the subject matter in the piece, as well the numerous major focal points, gives the illusion of movement from left to right across the paper. Although this piece is not symmetrical, it is evenly balanced on both sides, giving the painting harmony. Each subject in the painting is spaced correspondingly and accordingly, standing bold and in uniform. The composition is what I like try to avoid opinionated writing in a scholarly analysis

most about the painting, as it allows you to understand the story this piece is telling you without requiring you to understand the hieroglyphic symbols across the top, and even making you feel involved with the story itself.

3 The artwork incorporates a small variety of colours but uses them vividly. The papyrus paper on which it is painted is glazed with a yellow hue, giving the painting a warm, god-like glow. The artist achieves an overall tone of significance inside the scenes of the painting. It also helps create a contrast between the vibrant background against the dark skin of Hunefer, the clothing and the black lettering of the hieroglyphs. The radiant clothing both Hunefer and Osiris are dressed in attracts your eye to them, and helps you identify important figures. The use of green-toned paint for Osiris’s skin contributes to the viewers' understanding of his displayed

uniqueness to the other subjects in the piece. The artist

tone throughout the piece by using bold and vivid colour in the characters, as well as the background and setting.

Differing size and scale are also applied carefully, playing a consistent but crucial role throughout this piece; as well as a majority of Egyptian art during this era. The golden Judgement Scale placed inside the middle of the painting is a much larger size in comparison to the figures surrounding it. The artist used this extreme dramatization to signify importance within the object, especially as this is the main subject of the art piece. This importance placed on the object convinces the viewe

than the other individuals, and he sits upon an embellished throne adding a sense of hierarchy toward his character.

Throughout the entirety of the painting, many of the elements of art and principals of design have suggested a theme for the existence of higher power. The creator of this artwork was able to accurately inflict the viewer to an understanding of the hierarchy and importance of the individuals

4 inside the piece they created. By using harsh and bold colours to create an attraction of the eye, movement and composition to allow the viewer to follow along with every detail of the piece, and differing scale to display the contrast between important symbols, Judgement of Hunefer Before Osiris is effective in revealing the true theme.

This paper could have used an additional proofread to catch some of the wording and punctuation errors within it. As I said in the note, you have to make sure that any information that is not common knowledge or your own ideas is cited, because in a larger scale this could be considered plagiarism. The analysis was well done but you could have gone into a more specific analysis on the details in the artwork and the techniques that the artist used.
