Movie Reflection Mental Health and Wellness

I thought the movie “As Good as it Gets” was a good reflection of people struggling with mental disorders. Jack Nicholson is an amazing actor and portray his character’s struggles with OCD very well. I think his performance in this movie is what really made it enjoyable for me. From a film standpoint, I thought the screenwriting was done very well. The writing did a great job of accurately portraying human emotions and psyche. Each scene plays absolutely convincingly and feels very real. The movie was funny and quite emotionally affecting in places. It portrays three broken people that throughout the film, heal each other over time. Although the movie was pretty unique, I thought there were a lot of heartwarming scenes. One gripe would be that it seemed to drag on for awhile, I could see why a lot of people do not like the film. I for one, do not mind films that are longer as long as the acting is top notch and the writing is good. Throughout the film, Melvin struggles with his disorder and he avoids cracks in the street, washes his hands multiple times, and always makes sure that his door is locked at his home. When his love interest is around, Melvin tries to be a normal behaving and good man. Melvin does not seem to know how to be a good person but he tries, regardless of what Carol and others tell him. At times, the film seems a lot like a sitcom, however, there is a lot of deeper messages about humanity in this movie. Carol seems to struggle with these abnormal people in her life the entire movie and it is interesting to see how the characters develop. In my opinion, the dog is the key component to the movie. The dog is essential to sort of softening Melvin because he has to take care of it since the artist is in the hospital. I thought that

aspect of the film was very interesting and it added a cuteness and comedic factor while also sharing a deeper insight about the characters. The end of the movie might have seemed a little bit unrealistic but nonetheless it was a very feel-good ending and i thought it was deserving. Overall, I liked the movie a lot but i thought it was carried by the amazing acting performances and the dialogue. The premise of the movie actually reminds me of “Silver Linings Playbook”, which is another love film that involves main characters that have mental disorders, something that you do not see very often in Hollywood....
