Case Study on a creative practitioner (Storyboard Artist)...

Description

Jasmine Moody Case Study The following case study examines Brisbane 2D animator, storyboard, and background Artist Jasmine Moody, who recently had the show she worked on released, Bluey Season 2, and her career trajected towards becoming a successful practitioner in the animation industry. I have chosen to develop a case study on Moody’s career as she is a local artist with ambitious dreams and goals like mine: becoming a creative practitioner in the animation industry and creating work out of passion. I will be identifying career building concepts, theories, and studies, for instance the forms of capital practitioner Moody utilize till today that will aid me in my professional journey. Moody graduated from SAE Institute with a bachelor’s degree in Animation in 2015, having been the recipient of awards such as the Best Animation Student for high grades and overall best final film during her studies (Moody, LinkedIn 2020). During her early career, she also took on a variety of jobs while schooling - as an animator, clean-up artist, and other odd jobs, which allowed her to gain invaluable experiences. She also dedicated her time into running a small online store selling keychains and stickers of her digital art prints to pay off her student loans (AssortedJellies, 2020). She made sure she had gained enough experiences which is what companies seek for these days. Her self-reliance, achievements and work experiences gave her a broader range of career choices, such as her transition from an animator to a background and storyboard artist. To achieve her career goal, I may inspire to follow Moody’s steps in her professional journey. Throughout her career, Practitioner Moody has had to face several contextual issues relating to the animation and film industry, which I too may experience out in the field in the

future. Moody’s creative drive appears to be both self and social oriented as she creates work for her own enjoyment and self-improvement, and to extend her social network with the people that does similar practices as her (Moody, 2020). It would seem as though her intention of being a storyboard artist was motivated by her passion and interest for digital art and the window opportunity at Ludo Studio. In 2017, the total budget given to the production of Australian animated TV drama hit the lowest in 5 years (Screen Australia, 2018), implying that the year was a year of uncertainty for the animation industry. Moody entered Ludo Studio as a storyboard Artist, a job task that animators learn but not in depth, which must have been a fresh start for Moody (Moody, LinkedIn 2020). To develop an effective profession in the film industry and to achieve her career goals, Moody used several strategies that utilise different forms of capital to navigate the challenges in the animation industry. Firstly, Moody holds intellectual capital as she recognised the opportunity of a lifetime - storyboarding for a TV show called Bluey, and she was quick to hop on it. The show was eventually nominated for the 2019 TV week Logie awards (Burke, 2019) and subsequently bought over by Disney (Keast, 2020). Secondly, achieving career growth required experiential capital in the form of soft and hard skills: Moody gained software skills needed for her career in SAE Institute, and must have had possessed soft skills like empathy, critical thinking skills and interpersonal Skills. She was even called back by Ludo Studio to continue storyboarding for Bluey Season 2 (Moody, LinkedIn 2020). Thirdly, Moody developed her social capital: integrity and connections (Sam, 2016). She has over 3 thousand followers on her art twitter account and a high percentage of them are creative practitioners too (Moody, Twitter). Moody’s approach displays a high level of influence

and many relationships made. By engaging in social networking events to create a network of friends, colleagues and supporters, I too can adopt a similar approach to extend my social network. Finally, as the notion and the nature of the animation industry demands all animators to be transdisciplinary, Moody jumped from 2D animation to Storyboarding in her career on top of working on visual digital arts as her sideline and hobby. I see these capitals as crucial steps amount to her success in obtaining larger commissions in the later part of her career and similarly, is an approach I intend to adopt in my own career development. Practitioner Moody has used several useful strategies in developing her career that I can transfer to my own career development and ambitions. Practitioner Moody’s approach to building her career with social networking capability, transdisciplinary capability (Bridgstock, n.d.) and experiential capability, which she recognises as the key factors of her success. A potential transferable method for my own ambition to work in the animation industry is the expansion of my skill range and knowledge by deliberately working on a variety of projects, as Moody has done through her work for numerous companies. This is one way of getting to know a diverse range of people, fulfilling my obligations and building confidence. This will promote the professional skills and enhance my personal forms of capital.
