Write a personal reflection (in essay form) explaining the meaning and value of some of the principles of Catholic Social Thought in your own life (and/or experience). 1,

Catholic Social Thought philosophy is a set of nine principles which work

simultaneously to provide a way of life that inspires individuals to assist themselves and others to have a fulfilling life and help humanity thrive and develop. These principles pursue to strengthen, provide structure, and encourage the relationship between individuals and their communities, and the strength and health of these relationships directly affects human and community flourishment. The Catholic Social Thought ideology seeks to provide a moral outline where interpersonal associations between oneself and community members can be constructed and upheld. At the centre of these principles is the golden rule “to treat others how you yourself would wish to be treated.” This respect for others as well as sticking to the principles is crucial in attaining community wide flourishing.

The Promotion of Peace is one Catholic social thought principle which is defined as having respect for all human life, which in turn involves the safeguarding of the dignity and freedom of people ("Promotion of Peace | Caritas", 2021). ("Promotion of Peace | Caritas", 2021) states that peace is the fruit of justice and love and is dependent upon right order among human beings meaning that peace is far more than just the absence of war, but it is an essential attribute of God, a value to be embraced by all of humanity on a national and global level. ("Promotion of Peace | Caritas", 2021). As an individual this means whilst working collaboratively, we must have respect for all. For Example, In my own world the promotion of Peace is emphasised at university as various tasks are within a group and require respect between each other to help one another grow and flourish. We as individuals work together to

with respect and understanding to allow one another to have an input and succeed at the task as a whole rather than a group of individuals.

Stewardship of Creation is another catholic social thought principle which means being a responsible guardian. As an individual this to myself means that the steward is a manger and not an owner. Being a part of a society with growing awareness related to the uses of our physical environment, our environment is calling us to use a sense of moral responsibility and to play a role in protecting our environment. To me applying stewardship is looking after the gifts God has given, incorporating my own individual talents, the environment, and additional resources. As an individual myself stewardship of creation means taking responsibility to look after the environment around me and always ensure I help take care of my own household and managing arrangements for the resources my family and community need. I also make a conscious effort to carefully use materials that are biodegradable, reduce the waste I individually produce through recycling and considering the environmental effect in anything I do. I also consider stewardship of creation to be believing and understanding that everything you have is not your own and everything I have belongs to God.

The degree program I am studying is Physical Activity and health science.

Throughout this course I aim to go into a field of work where I can help individuals grow and gain a sense of fulfillment in their life. I’m aiming to become an occupational therapist where I can take my knowledge and skills gained to allow help for those in need. Throughout this degree so far I have gained various skills and knowledge which interlace with various social catholic principles such as the promotion of peace and stewardship of creation. The promotion of peace aims to have respect for all humans regardless of individual differences and safeguarding the dignity and freedom of all. During my units we are required to work as a group which allows me to gain experience with treating everyone with respect and

understanding and listening to the opinions and thoughts of those around me. Steward of creation is also taught throughout my degree where we must learn not to take advantage or become greedy remembering everything you have is not yours. I have also learnt that I have to consider my role and responsibility to help individuals with the knowledge I have gained and better their lives.

3.

One specific community I belong to is a community within my own suburban

community called Ashbury Netball Club. Within the club we as a whole aim to provide a safe and welcoming environment for people of all ages to have fun and join a sport group. The values and ideology that are presented in promotion of peace such as having respect for all. I believe at Ashbury as a young community member to help the younger community members have a role model to look up to and to always treat them with respect. I have taken on a coaching role in my community which allows me to also allows me to demonstrate the values of stewardship of creation. During my coaching role I have to become a responsible guardian and use the gifts god has given myself being able to play a state representative level of netball and pass own my own skills and knowledge to the youth whilst also respecting the space given to use.

4.

As seen in the ACU modules the common good principles implies that every

individual, no matter how high or low, has a duty to share in promoting the welfare of the community as well as a right to benefit from that welfare. ("Module 3: The history and principles of Catholic Social Thought", 2021). Common to myself implies ‘all inclusive’: meaning that the common good cannot reject any segment of the population. If any group within the community is rejected or excluded from participation of anything they wish to pursue, even at a marginal level, then that to me is contradiction to the notion of the common good and requires alteration. For example, if people are excluded by poverty from

participation in society and full flourishing as human beings, then governments have a duty to act to alleviate that poverty so the common good can be met. ("FDA Recalls Dole Blueberries Due to a Possible Parasite Contamination", 2021). The dignity of the human person principles means the innate personal values and rights which demands respect for all people, regardless of race, social class, wealth etc. It is linked to human rights and affirms the “inherent dignity + of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family” ("Internet Governance and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Part 9: Articles 26-30", 2021). I believe they are both relevant in the degree I am studying as health science I can take my knowledge and skills gained to allow help for those in need. I also want to be able to treat people with any differences with respect.
