ASSIGNMENT 1

2 Introduction

In this case study, we observed that Mark, who was the head of the medicine department, went to the medical leave due to some health issues. During this time period, the duties of Mark were assigned to Ruslan, the senior pharmacist. Under the leadership of Ruslan, the team members experienced less dispute and more cooperation, which encouraged them to focus more on the targeted goals. When Mark came back to the job after his recovery, the staffs was not happy and were unfriendly towards Mark. According to Daft (2015, p.5), “Leadership is an influence relationship among Leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes”. Thus, this case study depicts the importance of leadership in an organization. Mark’s Failure In Maintaining Relationship With The Team Members According to Fayol (2011, n.p.), "To manage is to forecast and to plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to control." Mark was having superannuated behavior towards his team members and implementing the time controlled managerial skills, which makes the working conditions unfavorable for the colleagues and results in the more conflicts among the team members. Mark emphasis more on the organizational goals rather than the relationship with the team members. Hostility Towards Mark And Contrast In The Opinion Of Team Members Mark’s old team member were not happy upon his arrival because he was authoritative. As a manager, Mark create boundaries, encourage competition, control, enforces tasks on the team members and focus on planning.(Lambton College in Toronto, 2019, Slide Num. 24 & 25) Thus, team members opposed Mark when he returned from leave.

ASSIGNMENT 1

3

When the employees were under the supervision of Ruslan, they encountered less disputes and felt more supportive. These changes encouraged the workers to give attention to organizational goals because Ruslan emphasises on leadership skills such as shared decision making, act as a motivator, reducing boundaries and heart to heart connection.( Lambton College in Toronto, 2019, Slide Num. 24 & 25). After experiencing leadership characteristics, the colleagues have a different view to work under Ruslan and ultimately, they were against Mark who focus on management skills. Profit To Organization And Variance In Leadership Styles Ruslan develops an environment in which every employee was able to focus on the goals of the organization. Under Ruslan’s leadership, the performance of team members improved, which further leads to achievement of goals, thus, making the organization to work efficiently. Staff members work collaboratively because Ruslan practices shared decision making, which leads to higher work output. Moreover, workers were happy and satisfied which help the organization to achieve better outcomes. Mark followed telling leadership style whereas Ruslan focus on the participative leadership style. In telling leadership style, the leader directs the followers about the task and its accomplishment. The leader gives less directions and give opportunity to team members to play the active role by sharing ideas and decisions in participative leadership style (Cherry, 2018, n.p.). Mark followed traditional style and every time place control on others, but Ruslan was confident, friendly, influential and optimistic personality and was liked by his colleagues. Moreover, Ruslan was more cooperative and motivate team members as compared to Mark.

ASSIGNMENT 1

4 Ruslan’s Leadership Theories And Style

This case study shows that Ruslan followed the trait theory, behaviour theory and influence theory. As Ruslan has an amiable personality trait, which differentiate his leadership from Mark’s leadership. The personality features of Ruslan were charming, friendly and confident, which helped him to influence his team members to make Ruslan’s leadership more effective as comparison to Mark’s leadership. Ruslan gave more attention to relationship and bonding with team members instead of focusing only upon task completion. He encourages his team member to equally participate in every task. Thus, he was following the participating style of leadership in his practice. Qualities For A Good Leader Mark should have some qualities to become a good leader like honesty, inspiration, empathy, enthusiastic, good communicator and follow shared decision making etc. These will help him to develop cooperation among his team members and this will also improve the outcomes of goals. Honesty, inspiration, empathy are the basic qualities for an effective leader. He should be honest towards his organisation and team members. He can encourage his team members by his behaviour to be dedicated towards their organisation. Mark must use empathetic approach in his leadership to understand and solve the problems of his team members. Mark should be a good communicator and listener. He must listen the point of view of his followers regarding the tasks and include them in the decision-making process. This leads to the reduction of conflicts among team members.

ASSIGNMENT 1

5 Handle The Situation As A Dean

If I would be the dean of the healthcare setting, I would set a meeting so that Mark and Ruslan would express their points as a manager and a leader respectively. Under Ruslan’s leadership, team members work collaboratively without any conflicts. By setting a meeting, Mark would understand the benefits of working as a leader, rather than as a manager. As a Dean, I would explain the importance of leadership skills and ask Mark politely to incorporate these skills in his managerial skills which would help to accomplish the goals of the organization and to maintain a friendly environment in the hospital. In this way, both Ruslan and Mark would work cooperatively, achieving the better outcomes. Even, management and leadership are crucial in the establishment of any organization. Leadership can never take the place of Management, instead, it should be included in the management. (Lambton College in Toronto, 2019, Slide Num. 23). Thus, I, being a Dean, will add leadership skills in the management skills so that self-importance of both Ruslan and Mark is not hurt. Conclusion Management and leadership, both plays an inevitable role in the organization. Focusing only on managerial skills affect the functioning of the organization. Thus, leadership skills should be incorporated into management so that established goals of the organization can be accomplished as well as team members would feel satisfied in the working environment.
