The function of human resource managers is to ensure that the most important assets of the company, which is its human resources, are promoted and assisted through programming, policy and guidelines as well as through efficient employment relationships by actively encouraging atmosphere. The notion behind human resources management is that workers who are applicable to effective management of human resources can make a contribution to a business's creative vision more efficiently and beneficially and ensure that the corporate aims and objectives are met. Human resource management is concerned with a variety of issues, such as: 

Recruiting and staffing

Learning and training

Compensation and benefits

Labour and employee relations

Each Human Resource team face difficulties in its operation as well as in the continuous application of policies throughout the company. As corporate world is quickly propelling, there are generally many obstacles to management of human resources that will continue to advance over the coming years. In this study, we will discuss issues concerning Human Research Management in our chosen company, which is Amazon.

3

BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY

Amazon.com, Inc. is a multinational technology company based in the United States that specializes in e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. It is among the Big Five corporations in the United States' information technology sector, along with Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook. Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos on July 5, 1994 in Bellevue, Washington, USA, and its main office are now in Seattle, Washington, USA. Jeff Bezos will officially step resigned as Chief of Amazon on July 5, 2021, and Andy Jassy will take over as the chief Executive of Amazon.

It began as an online bookstore but has since expanded to sell electronics, software, video games, clothing, furniture, food, toys, and jewellery. Amazon surpassed Walmart as the most profitable retailer in the United States in terms of market capitalization in 2015. Amazon paid $13.4 billion for Whole Foods Market in 2017, expanding its physical retail footprint significantly.

In 2018, Amazon Prime, the company's two-day delivery service,

surpassed 100 million subscribers worldwide.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT ISSUES IN AMAZON

I.

Safety and Health issue

Amazon employees undergo hazard training and conduct ergonomics exams, and each of the corporation's locations has a "tight end program." Regardless of these assertions, the online shop has a history of worker deaths, illnesses, and concerns of poor working conditions. Since 2017, Amazon has had a greater rate of significant injury accidents, which have resulted in workers missing work or being reassigned to light-duty activities, than other retail warehouse operators. According to statistics, there have been 5.9 significant accidents per each 200,000 working hours in an Amazon warehouse in 2020, which is the equivalent of 100 full-time employees working for a year. That is roughly double the rate of non-Amazon warehouses. Moreover, six Amazon employees have died on the job between November 2018 and April 2019, according to the National Organization for Occupational Health and Safety, that included Amazon on its 2019 “Dirty Dozen” list among the most harmful employers. Between January and March 2019, total of twenty-eight 911 calls were made at the Etna warehouse alone. Workforce activists and workers from Amazon around the world are pushing for tougher fines as injury and death records continue to expand in the company.

II.

Work-Life Balance

According to a PayScale survey, Amazon has one of the lowest employee retention rates in the business, with a median tenure of just one year. Workers at Amazon are expected to work long and late hours, responding to emails that arrive after midnight and endless workloads. They are also held to unreasonably high standards, according to the company. According to research, the CEO, Jeff Bezos does not believe in work-life balance. The employees at Amazon are working around the clock, checking emails in the middle of the night, on vacation, and at any other time that isn't considered a regular work day are all examples of this. Other than that, they are given harsh feedbacks. At work, flaws are brought out since criticism is encouraged, both in front of and behind people's backs. Moreover, Amazon push for mandated 60-hour work weeks without really having the job to sustain it in the system. They expect high-quality work in exchange for a salary that is in the middle of the pack and is capped at three years in the position. It is also stated that long working hours are mandatory especially during peak season with no extra pay. In general, employees in the Sales department and those with entry-level experience say they have a good work-life balance, but employees in the Customer Success department and those with 5 to 10 years of experience say there is room for improvement.

III.

Employee and Labor Relation

In March 2020, Employees have performed protest for safer working conditions, filed online requests and formed new groups of workers. The growth in the activity of workers highlighted the question of whether trade unions may try to take the time to organize workers in Amazon. The corporation employs more than 1.37 million Amazon frontline and Whole Foods workers in the United States between March and September. The tens of thousands of contract drivers responsible for delivery of the last miles of Amazon do not include that figure. Unionization of Amazon's staff would be a battle uphill. However, in Seattle, The National Labor Relations Board has decided that Amazon reproached illegally two of his most famous internal opponents, when he fired them last year. The staff, Emily Cunningham and Maren Costa publicly urged the corporation to lessen its climate change impact and address its warehouse staff issues. The officers of the agency informed Mr. Cunningham and Mrs. Costa that Amazon would be accused of unfair work practices should the firm not resolve the case in a letter from Mr. Cunningham to the New York Times. The case would then be taken before a judge of administrative law.

Over the last few decades, major

American non-union corporations, in especially those leading to the elections monitored by the National Labor Relations Board have been almost unwilling to organize activities. The elections had marked a huge change in the working relationship of Amazon. Collective action by Amazon employees was rare a few years ago but strikes and protests at the firm warehouses have been made more frequent by security issues brought to a high level by the Covid-19 outbreak, along with greater finances and focus from unions.

7

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, an employee-oriented, efficient working environment where staff members involved is essential for a good Human resources department. Human Resource's significance is seamlessly disregarded inside the hectic daily life at work; however, the organisation would be less productive without the contribution of this department. Every part of the company is made up of people. And organizations can be more financially viable by managing people, lead more efficiently, build brand awareness and work much better. When a company faces a problem, employees may feel dissatisfied with the company or their job, thus, productivity may drop and revenue may significantly reduce. Furthermore, poor human resources may prompt prospective employees to reconsider joining the organisation due to bad employee relations. Every firm's performance is measured by its development of employees. The Human Resource department of a company is critical to its development and the achievement of its marketing plan. Therefore, human Resource is the key of elements of success of the company to achieve their objective.
