Description

Kimiko Jackson-Valle Professor Timothy Davis Sustainable Environments 001 11/17/2021 Geoengineering is a strategy for managing climate change by lowering carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and limiting the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface. However in the Ted Talk, geoengineering is emphasized as a last option rather than a solution. Some methods that Keith mentioned in the Ted Talk are cutting emissions, which could take some time, moving sulfur products into the mesosphere, to reduce harm to the ozone layer and possibly making particles move to the poles, which would have little harmful impacts in the middle of the world while cooling the earth where it is most needed. I think we should do serious research on geoengineering because it can help us study climate patterns, and it can be used just in case there are no other options. In combination with other methods, it will possibly allow for a more positive outcome. I don’t necessarily think we should have a national research program on it because it is considered a last resort solution. Even if it works, it'll only be a temporary fix. We can't just keep doing more and more of it to offset increasing emissions since higher levels of geoengineering may cause further changes in the climate system. The development of global governance might be a way to stop countries from acting unilaterally and undertaking a geoengineered project with global implications. Individual countries would be prevented from taking matters into their own hands, potentially harming the entire world. After reading the article, Geo-engineering: Climate fixes 'could harm billions, the moral hazards associated with these projects are the “potential implications for rainfall patterns”

(Shukman). It was discovered that billions of people could be negatively impacted by the changes in rainfall patterns. For example, in the Sahel region in Africa, they have the potential of completely drying out. I don’t think they outweigh the gains from altering a worsening climate change, but I do know that there are long-term effects from each result....
