Corticosteroids CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action nasal glucocorticoids decrease inflammation associated w/ allergic rhinitis. By decreasing nasal congestion, they also help w/ sinusitis in addition to allergic rhinitis.

Therapeutic Use To reduce the effects of allergic rhinitis including sneezing, nasal, itching, runny nose.

Complications sore throat, nosebleed, headache, burning in the nose

Contraindications/Precautions Budesonide is pregnancy risk category B contraindicated in pt hypersensitive to drug -use nasal formulation cautiously in pt. w/ septal ulcers, nasal surgery, nasal trauma, or untreated localized nasal mucosa infections. - use caution in pt w/ TB

Interactions drug-drug: ketoconazole: may inhibit metaabolism and increase level of budesonide. monitor pt for adverse reactiohns and adjust dosage as needed.

Medication Administration Inhalation: give at regular intervals 1-2 x a day, give jet nebulier connected to compressor w airflow Intranasal: prime pump by actuating 8x before 1st use, shake before each actuation.

Nursing Interventions -contact provider if adverse effects occur -If bronchospasm occurs after inhalation use,stop therapy,& treat w/ bronchodilator -monitor bone mineral density in pt at risk for decreased bone
