Case-524: Comparing “Death of a Moth” by Annie Dillard and “The Death of a

Moth” by Virginia Woolf in a Student-Led Discussion The classroom activity in this video is an example of using Bloom’s taxonomy to verbally engage in a student-driven discussion to analyze, evaluate, and make meaning in two non-fiction essays. The teacher leads the conversation in discussing the author’s meaning behind the essays. After each student gives their interpretation, other students analyze what was said then can add or subtract from that interpretation and give their own. Higher-order thinking is very evident in this video because students are engaging in the top three levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Students are analyzing the writer’s purpose in the essays then synthesizing and applying that knowledge in their own writing. (Snowman, J. & McCown, R., 2015)

In order to enhance student engagement for this activity in the video, I would ask

students to come to class with one or two questions ready. The purpose for this is to have the ability to engage every student. Some students may be reluctant to share because they feel shy or are uncomfortable speaking in public. By having a question ready ahead of time, I can call on reluctant speakers to ask their question then the rest of the class can discuss the answer. They may feel slightly out of their comfort zone at first but it will help them feel empowered to participate because they prepared a contribution. (Snowman, J. & McCown, R., 2015)...
