Clark 1 Keva Clark Professor Burgress English 105 19 September 2019 Growth Mindset Challenge Essay In today's society, there are two mindsets that people can be in today. A particular time I endured a fixed mindset is when I was in Algebra 2. I always use to believe I was always good at math up until I got into Algebra 2. Even though, every time I would do an equation and it ends up not working out, I would give up on that problem or even stop doing other problems because it was getting to frustrated. I often use to tell myself that math wasn’t for me. But I knew that always giving up on a math problem every time I get frustrated wasn’t going to work out for me in the long run. Now my growth mindset is when I fail, I will always try harder to put 100% into whatever I do. Never giving up is a big part of the growth mindset because if you give up you won’t ever believe in your ability and intelligence. “Some students believe mistakes and setbacks mean that they don’t have the ability”(Carol Dweck). I was one of those students who believed that I wasn’t smart enough. I always believed that if I made a mistake that it wouldn’t be good enough. But there is some time where I would have a fixed mindset. Sometimes when I hit a big hardship, I think that my capabilities of learning stops, similar to a cup of water that can’t be filled anymore. This happens when I’m too overwhelmed or stressed out with something I am learning at the moment. I have noticed a pattern in my learning where, if I am in a good mood, I usually have a growth mindset. At other times I show a fixed mindset when I feel that I don’t know what I am doing or don’t understand something. The phases that come to my mind all the time is “why I can’t do this?”. This doesn’t help my state of mind. I have proven to handle some

Clark 1 hard-educational situations as well. When I am faced with something, big or something I feel that I cannot handle, I first make a plan. This plan consists of what I can accomplish in a certain amount of time. It helps me stay calm and allows me to achieve what I need to do promptly. Having better time management could help me keep a better growth mindset. Being able to better my time will help my mindset. When I don’t understand something before class, I find that I have more of a growth mindset. Even though, when I don’t understand something, I find that my mindset is usually fixed. But if I find ways to better manage my time, I could use that extra time studying or getting a tutor. This improved time management could consist of using a planner and sticking to my plans of doing homework assignments before the due dates....
