Expected Pharmacological Action inhibit effects of GABA on receptors in the spinal cord, resulting in suppression of hyperacting reflexes

Therapeutic Use Relieves skeletal muscle spam in -Spinal cord injury -Multiple sclerosis -Cerebral palsy

Complications drowsiness/dizziness, weakness/fatigue, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and urinary retention Do not cause dependence withdrawl symptoms: anxiety, restlessness, visual hallucinations, and seizures

Medication Administration start at lowest effective dose and gradually increase by 5mg increments every 3 days until you are giving 20mg dose 3-4 times per day Give with food or milk

Contraindications/Precautions -Have know hypersensitivity -Should not take concurrently with MAOIs (hypotension or increase CNS depression) -Cyclobenzaprine is contraindicated for clients taking MAOI antidepressants within the past 2wk -Use with caution (older adults, children, severe mental illness, seizure disorder, have had cerebrovascular acciedent)

Nursing Interventions

Interactions -Avoid drinking/ taking other CNS depressants -Use of cyclobenzaprine with MAOI antidressants may cause a hyperpyretic crisis and seizure -Serotonin syndrome can happen if cyclobenzaprine is administered to clients taking SSRIx, SSNRIs, and tricyclic antidepressants
