TED TALK ON ENVIROMENTAL ISSUE: MARY ROBINSON ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Kristine Love Petilo Front Range Community College

TED talk on Environmental issue: Mary Robinson on Climate Change The ted-talk by Mary Robinson on Why Climate Change is a threat to the human rights is not only intriguing but has also highlighted the fact that how climate change will affect the poorer nation and the people from these nations have to bear the brunt of climate change. She in our illuminating speech talks about the threat and the possibility of fighting together to deter the threat of Climate Change1. In her speech, the most unexpected things she envisages is that the Climate change is being unequal. She emphasised that while wealthy nations have the opportunity to combat rising seas and dying farms, impoverished people across the globe already live on and risk their human rights with murderous storms, hunger and the loss of their own land. While I understood how harmful climate change would be to us all, I am unaware of its focus on the people of the poorest country currently suffering from the effects of global warming. Mary Robinson at the end of her speech urges us to join the global climate justice campaign. The question that Mary Robinson has dealt here is that global warming due to climate change will be unequal as the rich nations has the resources to deal with Climate Change for now. But for poor nation and the different communities in those nation is standing at the threshold from being affected due to Climate Change and its impact on their lives has resulted in large scale violation of human rights. Many environmentalists worry, that things will only get worse, from growing droughts to rising floods, from decreased agricultural output to more frequent and severe storms. They are increasingly threatened with human rights – to safety, health and sustainable livelihoods – by changes in the climate of the planet 2. According to a report by United Nation Environmental Programme, the climate catastrophe is threatening the right to water and sanitation, leading to water crises such as the one in Bolivia in which 1 Mary Robinson, why climate change is a threat to human rights, video, 2015, online,

TED talk on Environmental issue: Mary Robinson on Climate Change glaciers are declining and water restriction in large towns is needed 3. Moreover, the report emphasised that people already burdened by poverty and persecution are typically the most hit, but the least capable of dealing with it. Every day, the climate catastrophe persists, their effort to make a livelihood, feed their family and build secure houses is increasingly harder. According to report by the United Nation Human Rights Commission, envisages that the current poverty and inequality will be exacerbated by climate change. The effect on impoverished countries and areas will be the most severe, since poor people live and work in places. Developing nations will pay for an estimated 75% to 80% of climate change expenditures4. The report highlighted the fact that In Niger, shifting rainfall patterns contribute to increasing desertification which has caused huge losses in livestock and food insecurity for Tuareg and Wodaabe people. Snow loss in South America may pose severe risks to more than nine million people living in Lima 5. Thus, the ted talks by Robinson highlighted that it was high time that state leaders from both rich and poorer nation should come forward and work on the agenda of mitigating and fighting the climate change together.
