Description

Badminton BADMINTON Game Overview Is a game for singles or doubles. Players win points by hitting a shuttlecock over a high net so it lands on the other side of the court before the opposition can return it. It is a game of delicacy and sudden bursts of power. Facts about Badminton After soccer, Badminton is the second most popular participation sport in the world. It's extremely popular in Malaysia and Indonesia. A shuttlecock can travel 200mph making badminton the fastest racquet game in the world. In 1873, The Duke of Beaufort brought the Indian game of POONA to England, and started to play it on his country estate in BADMINTON, GLOUCESTERSHIRE.

• Shuttlecocks used in the Olympics have 16 goose feathers, and a cork base and are fragile. Top players will go through 10 shuttlecocks in one match. Players wear light clothing to keep cool. Serving • Server and receiver stand in diagonally opposite courts as defined by the central line on the court. • A serve must be delivered underhand from below the server's waist, and the server must have both feet on the floor. • The serve alternates from the right and left halves of the court, beginning from the right side in every game. Players change ends after each of the 1st two games and midway through the third game. Game Play • Matches are the best of three games Players are not allowed to touch the net with any part of their bodies or their racquet

• If a server wins a rally he/she scores a point and serves again from the other service court. (other side of his/her own court) If the serving player or side loses the rally the other team or player scores a point. The service then passes to the next player in turn, who in a singles game would be the opponent, but in doubles could be either the server's partner or, if both players have served, would be one of the opposing players. Games go to 21 points, unless the score reaches 2020. In that case, the first player or team to gain a 2 point advantage wins. • If the score reaches 29-29, the player/team to get to 30 first wins. Scoring Points A point is scored by hitting the shuttle over the net so it lands on the court before the opponent can return it, or so that the opponent makes an error in returning it. A point is lost if: 1) The shuttle is hit into or under the net. 2) If it lands outside the opponent's court. 3) If the shuttle touches a player or his/her clothing. 4) If a

player hits the shuttle before it crosses the net. 5) The shuttle touches the roof/ceiling. 6) A player hits the shuttle twice in a row. 7) Both partners hit the shuttle before it's returned to the opposing side. Side line for Doubles Side Line for Singles / 18 m

Types of Shots Drop - a shallow hit that just sends the shuttle over the net and lands at the front of the opponents court. Underhand clear - high lob to send the shuttle to the back of the opponents court. • Smash - powerful shot that drives the shuttle down

into the opponents court. Backhand - less powerful and are often defensive shots to move the opponent out of position. • Overhead clear - is an overhand shot that is meant to send the shuttle to the back of the opponents court. Serve - shuttle must be contacted below the waist and both feet are planted to the ground. A "tennis-style" serve is illegal. The best tactical position is near the centre line in the middle of the court. Players are able to get to any type of shot.
