Belbin’s aspects of team working

In this essay I will be exploring Belbin’s aspects of team working and discuss two main insights they bring to understanding team dynamics, in NHS and Coca Cola. A team is a group that is built with a 'common purpose and some degree of mutual interdependence’. King, D. et al (2013 pg155). The concept of team dynamics is the sense of a relationship amongst a group with different roles and responsibilities.

Belbin’s theory believes a team is formed by members with different roles. Cottrell, S. (2013 pg253) points out teams are ‘most effective when everyone makes a contribution’. Organisations are not aware but often apply Belbin’s team roles when establishing a successful team, allocating roles to different members. The importance of using Belbin’s team roles is it helps identify people’s strengths and weaknesses, hence using this information to build a team dynamic working relationship amongst the team. A perception on how Belbin’s team roles can be demonstrated in the NHS, in team working and understanding of team dynamics. For instance, on a hectic evening gushing with patients. Belin’s team roles are played and dynamic working relationship is built. In this scenario, the senior nurse will have to play as team worker, supporting the nurses, working alongside with a coordinator in disguised as the doctor, who acts as chairperson, clarifying tasks, and targets. This dynamic relationship built amongst the

nurses, senior nurse and doctor is core, because lack of compassion and motivation from the senior nurses and doctors, to the nurses can impact on their well-being in the team, and effect the team to treat their patients at their ability. King’s College London (2013) points out that if staff wellbeing at work is good, it is likely that staff will perform better in their jobs. Additionally, a proactive team dynamic relationship is spread across more within the team, as the consultant comes in disguised as specialists and plant, sharing knowledge and approaches with the nurses, then with this information the nurses puts it into work and practice, acting as an implementers. Finally the doctor, comes in again, acting as completer finisher, working alongside with nurses, confirms thorough, and searches for any errors. In this case the doctor ensures medications and routines are carried out precisely.

Furthermore, another insight Belbin’s team roles can be demonstrated is in large companies, for instance Coca Cola. In 1993 Coca Cola entered the energy drink market with a new product called Powerade, using the diversification market strategy. Reflecting on Belbin’s team roles, a resource investigator played a significant role, this was beneficial as new opportunities were generated, in this scenario, the opportunity was the gap in the energy drink market, using this information came the plant, an individual had to generate ideas, and in this case it was the Powerade. Furthermore, a more working dynamic relationship is expanded amongst with other members, as an individual had to come in play to act as an a

monitor evaluator to be critical with the ideas generated from the plant, and to be able to see all opportunities, working with resource investigator. Similarly, a working dynamic relationship was formed among an implementer and the plant. An individual had to come in play as an implementer, using the new ideas generated from the plant, into practice and work. In the scenario, applying the marketing strategic, creating Powerade and entering the energy drink market. Alongside, the implementer, came a specialist, providing knowledge and skills on the energy drink market. This is important because lack of knowledge in a new market can cause the business cost. Coca Cola failed terribly when entering China due to lack of understanding of the language, their translation was appalling. Coca Cola meant female horse stuffed with wax" This did not appeal to the market, and cost the business at the end.

In conclusion, the importance of Belbin’s team roles in team working is it helps individuals communicate and build a more proactive dynamic relationship amongst the team, this is pointed out in the NHS scenario, the plant and specialist in other words the consultant is able to share information and work alongside with nurses, who act as implementers, using the knowledge provided into practice and work.
