1 Benefits of a College Education Let me ask you this, do you believe a college or post-secondary education is a necessity? As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” With most challenges or path’s in life, there is pros to every situation and ultimately there are cons as well. Some may have concerns over jeopardizing their long-term future with the college route. Individuals may question the amount of time it takes to obtain a college degree, or the finical stress that may come with the multitude of student loans, or even potentially damaging their respective credit scores. I believe a college education is essential, it allows us to achieve personal growth, it exposes us to increased job opportunity’s, and also opens the road to further pursuing your career through network connections. Therefor a college degree is a part of the puzzle to long term happiness. If you’re one of the recently graduated high school students, or maybe you’re just interested in potentially pursing a college degree and you’re on the fence about the value of a bachelor’s degree. You might be swayed by the amount of personal benefits that come with the college experience. With the workload that post-secondary education requires there is no question that skills such as writing, time-management, and also working within group dynamics that have already been established prior in earlier education will be further improved on and more polished. There are also chances to improve on interacting with fellow students, or teachers, or even getting better in select situations such as presentations. Looking far ahead in the scope of things, when finally completing your college program and earning that bachelor’s degree you will feel empowered; you will feel a sense of reward for your hard work and it will definitely improve your confidence. This may be why bachelor’s degree holders report higher

2 levels of self-esteem than high school graduates. (Northeastern University, 2020) Either way citizens with a college degree help provide to a more engaged community. One of the biggest points used in ‘The College Advantage’ written by Josh Dehaas is the importance of networking opportunities. Dehaas uses multiple examples of previous university students who were looking at the positives of university and college respectively, and one that really stood out head and shoulders above the rest was the value of being able to experience hands on opportunity’s in their field and also take the advantage of building networks and connections in their careers. It truly is the ‘The College Advantage.’ Building and maintaining connections is essential in todays job market. College education can guarantee that. Rather it’s from being integrated through your programs field placement which is designed to help you meet people who can help construct your future, or possibly taking advantage of the multiple job fairs that students have available. It’s all about using the resources that you have available and getting the most bang for your buck. College students can expect a level of support from their mentors and professors that isn’t available anywhere else. (Northeastern University, 2020) In my opinion, the biggest benefit to a college education is increased access to job opportunities. Without a post-secondary education, options for a career are very limited. Careers such as retail positions, restaurant staff members or even manual labor positions seem almost unavoidable, why is this? According to Northeastern University college, graduates see 57 percent more job opportunities than non-graduates, and it is predicated that by the end of 2020, twothirds of all jobs will require a post-secondary education. This is due to the fact that a degree allows you to qualify for positions of work that you wouldn’t be equipped for otherwise. According to research by Burning Glass Technologies, two million new jobs posted online per quarter require a bachelor’s degree or higher. This statistic was pretty mind-blowing to me and

3 clearly shows the importance of a post-secondary education. As previously touched on in the last paragraph network connections also increase exposure to job opportunities. College as a whole is one gate way to a bigger world in your career. In conclusion a post-secondary education is no longer an option, it is a necessity. It is the most important level of education because it paths the road for success. Post-secondary is a lot like a road, it is a very fitting analogy in my opinion. It might take a while to reach your goals, sometimes you might even be going the wrong way. When you eventually get where you have coveted, you will able to look down your journey and see growth and improvement. All the pros are undeniable and are definitely worth the risk, I truly believe there is nothing like the college advantage.
