Hunter DeLaMare Bro. Geoff Winfree FAML 200 January 23, 2016 Response Paper #3 – “Beware of Pride” by Ezra Taft Benson For this assignment, we were to read Ezra Taft Benson’s talk titled, “Beware of Pride”, in which President Benson discusses the great sin of pride. In his talk, he discusses what it means to be prideful and how pride isn’t always the standard definition. Pride is to have enmity toward another, or toward God, and at the root of all pride is the selfishness of man. In order to overcome this pride, which may not always be clearly evident within ourselves, one must humble themselves before God and walk in the straight paths of the Lord. As blunt and forthright as President Benson is in this talk, I feel that it is needed and that he really gets his point across. After reading this and reflecting over my own life, I realized that pride really is a sin that we’re not always aware of. We can be so quick to identify pride in others and judge, but by doing so and esteeming ourselves above another we make ourselves no better. Pride truly is the universal sin of the world and the “great vice”. This explains the large and spacious building in Lehi’s dream and the vast multitude within it; we have all been there at some point in our lives, but we can overcome it through humility. Humility is the opposite of pride; it’s the subjection of our will to the will our Father in Heaven. It is no longer “my will be done”, but “Thy will be done”. Through humbling ourselves and becoming meek and submissive as a child, we can overcome the temptations of the adversary and shake off the bands of sin. President Benson’s address was perfect because becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ that learns to be humble and seek out the Lord in times of trial is my goal for this semester. I’m grateful to

have been able to read this and look back at it for more counsel in the future as I apply Pres. Benson’s teachings into my life. Humility is the key overcoming the pride of this world and drawing nearer unto God....
