Geoff Winfree FAML 200 March 14, 2016 Response Paper #10 – “Mature Intimacy: A Parent’s Guide” In the article “Mature Intimacy: A Parent’s Guide”, produced by the Church, the principles of developing and maintaining a mature intimate relationship are discussed. We learn of the great challenges and rewards that lie in wait for those choosing to be married. The proper way to treat each other and build the relationship before and after marriage is also discussed throughout and is vitally important. As a single student attending BYU-Idaho, the opportunities to find a spouse are close to limitless. It’s a matter of perspective and effort on my part; whether or not I’m actively trying to look or just hoping to chance upon some miracle. Looking at different examples in my life though, I know a lot of married couples, couples that are about to be married and couples that are simply courting at the moment. Looking at the differences between these stages and the discrepancies of the way their lives are lived compared to the principles taught in the article, it’s easy to see how difficulties arise in marriage. Couples that focus their relationship around the Gospel and becoming more emotionally and spiritually connected are better off in the long run if they do this before marriage. However, couples that merely focus on the physical and sexual before marriage, while not necessarily crossing any lines or breaking commandments are bound to have problems as they are evident in the relationship. Couples that know the value of an emotional and spiritual bond and have restraint in the physical/sexual side of relationships will be blessed. It is important to see these values as more important and to see the physical side as an expression of love to fulfill the needs of the other, not your own. The closer couples are to God and the more centered their relationship is around the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the better off they’ll be and the happier and more fulfilling their relationship will be....
