Description

Hunter DeLaMare Bro. Geoff Winfree FAML 200 February 27, 2016 Response Paper #8 – “How Do I Love Thee” by Jeffrey R. Holland In Elder Holland’s speech given at BYU, he addressed the three core foundations that create and maintain a healthy and stable relationship. These fundamental principles apply to everyone in the world, not just members of the Church, and can be used in dating, courtship and marriage. These core principles are as follows: first, is to have a selfless quality and be charitable, second, is that we should not be easily provoked, and third, is that we should bear and endure all things. As I thought and reflected over the words and advice of Elder Holland, I could begin to see the startling realization of what this world has come to when it comes to the way we view marriage and relationships, even in the Church. I remembered an article in the school paper I had read a few weeks ago about domestic abuse and how most of the cases here in Rexburg are caused by BYU-I students. How saddening it is to see that? If only we were always striving to be more like Christ, follow His example, and have the love that He had for all of us, things would be different. These principles that Elder Holland taught are not to be taken lightly, or as something that we can do without. If we were to lack just one of these principles, our relationships could be in jeopardy. By applying these things into our lives and learning to have charity, bite our tongues, and endure through the tough times in life, we can have a Christ-centered relationship/marriage. Having our relationship focused and centered around Christ is what will ultimately bring us the most joy and happiness out of that relationship if we but do what He has asked and follow Him....
