HUMANE KILLING 1.
After some procedures, it may be necessary to kill the animal to prevent further suffering. The person who conducted the procedure must ensure that the animal is killed competently and humanely. List out the appropriate methods used in humane killing for the animals in research (2 marks). Refer to website https://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/animals/three-rs/ 1) Replace the use of animals with alternative techniques, or avoid the use of animals altogether. 2) Reduce the number of animals used to a minimum, to obtain information from fewer animals or more information from the same number of animals. 3) Refine the way experiments are carried out, to make sure animals suffer as little as possible. This includes better housing and improvements to procedure which minimise pain and suffering and for improve animal welfare.

CARCASS DISPOSAL 1. The carcass must be disposed of properly. By referring to the video, describe how you would dispose of the carcass in the lab (3 marks). https://youtu.be/VDiGd4620ac 1) Firstly, the carcass needs to be put into a bio-hazard bag. 2) Then the bio-hazard bag needed to be sealed or tie tightly. 3) Then, the carcass needed to be stored in animal carcasses freezer. Make sure that the temperature is set to -40 ℃ . 4) Recorded the details of user, date, time, number of carcasses of animal and the type of the animals into the freezer book log. 5) Lastly, the carcasses will be taken by the clinical waste contractor every two weeks to be collected and disposed of.
