Lab Text: ALL necessary lab materials will be on CANVAS in “Modules” section EXCEPT FOR SIMBIO LAB MODULES—These will be available for purchase and download from SIMBIO (or from bookstore). The cost for these labs will be approximately $18 total, since I got two modules for free for the class. SIMBIO SOFTWARE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CHROMEBOOKS, CELLPHONES, AND PROBABLY NOT COMPATIBLE WITH TABLETS SO IF YOU DON’T HAVE A PC OR MAC, YOU SHOULD GET A LOANER FOR THE SEMESTER FROM MSU FOR FREE. YOU SHOULD MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR THIS NOW, SINCE OUR QUIZZES AND EXAMS WILL ALSO REQUIRE PC OR MAC WITH LOCKDOWN BROWSER AND WEBCAM. YOU WILL RECEIVE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SIMBIO AS SOON AS I HAVE IT.

Attendance and Lateness Policy: Completion of laboratory assignments is Mandatory. Unsubmitted lab assignments will receive a grade of zero. More than two unsubmitted lab assignments will result in failure of the course regardless of course average. Late assignments will be penalized. Grading: Your laboratory grade accounts for 25% of your final grade for BIOL112. Your laboratory grade is broken down approximately as follows: Lab Reports = 40% Midterm = 20% Final = 20% Research Project = 20% Research project date TBD

Lab exams are not cumulative. The final will not include material on the midterm. The following are expectations for the lab sessions of this course: Complete at-home lab assignments and submit by the due date each week. You will mostly have to follow written instructions. Following a written laboratory protocol is an important skill to develop. Read the lab materials as soon as possible so that you can ask the instructor questions and still submit your assignment on time. I

Things you should know for future lab courses (but we don’t have to worry about for online): Lab Safety: 1. Food and drink are not permitted for in person lab. 2. Dress appropriately for in-person lab safety: no open toe shoes; long hair must be pulled back; and wear long pants rather than shorts. 3. Lab is not finished until every lab table is CLEAN. You must put away equipment and clean messes before leaving the lab. 4. Use extreme care with laboratory chemicals, microscopes, equipment, tools and glassware. This is required for everyone’s safety and so that all students have functioning lab equipment.

NOTE: Code of Conduct at MSU Academic dishonesty is any attempt by a student to submit as his/her own work that which has not be completed by him/her or to give improper aid to another student in the completion of an assignment. No student may intentionally or knowingly give or receive aid on any test or examination, or on any academic exercise that requires independent work. This includes the use of technology (for example, text messaging or using a camera phone, etc) or prohibited materials of any sort to give or receive aid on a test or examination. No notes or electronic devices can be used during exams unless expressly permitted by Dr. O’Hagan. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the entire course. Plagiarism is defined as using another person’s words as if they were your own, and the unacknowledged incorporation of those words in one’s own work. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, submitting as one’s own a project, paper, report, test, program, design, or speech copied from, partially copied, or partially paraphrased work of another (whether the source is printed, under copyright in manuscript form, or on the internet/electronic media) without proper citation. Source citations must be given for works quoted or paraphrased. To use ideas from any other source, re-write in your own words and cite the source. It is your job to make sure you are not plagiarizing, even if unintentionally.
