Two types of verbs: Transitive – the verb does transfer its action to an object Intransitive – the verb does not transfer its action to an object
Sentence Pattern 1: Contains an intransitive verb Does not require a word to complete the sense of the action Examples o The child runs o The tree fell o The customer complained loudly o The professor walked into the room unexpectedly The purpose is to simply state that the subject exists o Ask questions like how, where, when Sentence Pattern 2: Purpose is to rename the subject and to say that the subject is the same as something else Subjective complement – completes the verb and renames the subject The intransitive linking verb is often a form of be Examples o John is a talented musician o The performer seemed nervous o His words proved meaningless o The fabric wore thin o The roses look beautiful in that vase...
