Book Review- Cat's Cradle...

Description

Sanjana Shah Book Review Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut was a refreshing read, depicting lives of the three children whose father created the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. The narrator is attempting to write a novel on the accounts of different people at the exact time the bomb was dropped, and through this, he comes to learn the backstory of the interesting family of Dr. Hoenikker. The three children divide between themselves the last of his inventions, Ice-9 following their father’s death; however, the don’t know it’ll prove to be fatal. Vonnegut effectively uses pathos to really paint a picture in the readers’ minds about the flaws humanity and how we should continue to value of human life, and he does this through his contemporary satire, Cat’s Cradle. However, some of the language and events that transpire in this novel may not be suitable for young children. The two brothers and their sister attempt to navigate the world with their arsenal of an innovative ice that freezes at unusually high temperature. A trail a death and ruin follow them where they go, and they try to use this technological advancement to get what they want out of life. Throughout the course of this novel, the reader sees how Vonnegut views the irresponsibility of nuclear scientists, and he does this through his portrayal of the Hoenikker family. The book touches on many other important societal norms and aspects of humanity. Vonnegut touches on things like the effects of isolation, depression, and inactive parenting. He also mentions broader themes such as the insatiable greed of humans and how it often times leads to violence. Overall, Cat’s Cradle was an amazing book that portrays the flaws of certain scientific actions and how they may be wrongly motivated. This book is a unique read that is definitely worth your time, and I’d give it an 9.5 out of 10....
