Description

Makenna Gervais UNV-109HN November 19, 2020 Brave New World In Brave New World, Huxley communicates ideas about science and society in fiction by using technology to explain how the World State is controlling its people and to warn us of what our society could easily become if we continue with the science expansions that are happening in our world now. He warns us about technology taking over and making us all numb minded people who don’t life individual lives anymore. The World State controls and utilizes multiple different types of technology including hypnopedia conditioning, extreme contraceptive measures and a few other significant medical interventions. The leaders of the World State justify their over-controlling methods by saying they’re for progress and exploration when in reality the bettering technology is just for the desire to control society further. One major example of science being a tactic to control society is the Bokanovski process of breeding individuals in bulk. By streaming each batch of embryos into different class groups, they’re able to control how many people are assigned specific skills and roles in society. Each of these roles are then learned by sleep teaching. This helps people learn their assigned craft without wasting time during the day but it’s really just another way to control people. This is shown with a group of rocket repairment who are only “truly happy when they’re standing on their heads.” (75) This helps them enjoy their job more because they need to be upside in order to work on the rocket ships, so even though no one really wants to be upside these men think it’s the best place for them. He uses this example of sleep training to further his idea that humanity is

using science to create a modifiable future where humans can be conditioned to behave in any certain way that they government wants them to behave. Another way Huxley communicates about society is through the characters names. One example of this is with “Ford” who is replaced as the God in Brave New World and represents the replacement of religion by the devotion of technology. Here Huxley isn’t too concerned with the actual advancement of things like cars and such but is more talking about the effects of increased reliance on technology for humanity. The story mainly focuses on technology taking over but then John the Savage steps up and decided that he’s pissed about the lack of freedoms that they’re given. This changes the readers perspective and encourages them to identify with this new rebellious character allowing them to fight against science and technology, not just in the story but in our real lives now so we can prevent them from controlling our happiness and making that the norm. Overall, Huxley uses technology in a big and loud way to explore not just the idea of science but the intertwining of science in society. He tries to highlight the economic values of happiness and stability that society aims for but warns us what can happen if we achieve this goal the wrong way. He warns us that the technological influence might soon become much to much and much to powerful for us.
