However, this grading scale can be taken as a guarantee that you will receive a letter grade no lower than that which is listed above for a given percentage score range. Extra Credit: There will be only 3 categories of extra credit in BIO 121: 1. Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) sessions; this will be explained by email and through Blackboard by Dr. Snyder. 2. Up to 1% of course grade worth of extra credit for pre-course evaluation. 3. Limited possible opportunities via participation in online surveys. Students should note that no other extra credit is expected. Extra credit points are added to the total earned points out of 1000 points possible for the entire course graded items, as per the point distribution listed above, and will not be tallied until final exams have been scored.

LAB ATTENDANCE & GRADING: Please read ALL of the following as you will be held accountable for this information: Students are expected to attend all labs during the semester; however, we recognize that there may be times when absences occur for various important reasons. Please read the following policies carefully so that you will understand the expectations for attendance in Bio 121 Lab. 1. The Bio 121 lab curriculum consists of 12 lab sessions, a group lab report, and a final lab practical exam. 2. The lab portion of Bio 121 will involve learning basic lab safety, doing experiments, and using lab techniques such as microscopy, dissection, and observation to enhance learning.

7

BIO 121 SYLLABUS – FALL 2019 3. NOTE: There are no lab make-ups. Students MUST attend the lab sessions for which they are enrolled. Students may not sit in on another lab session that they are not registered for in order to make up a missed lab or in anticipation of a lab they expect to miss. It is a violation of the state and university fire codes to have people in a lab class who are not on the roster for that section. 4. Absence from a lab session due to an accepted documented reason (see * below) will not count against the student. The total number of points available will be adjusted and the final percentage will be calculated accordingly. 5. Any absence for reasons other than an accepted documented reason (see * below) will be recorded as a zero and will count as such in the final calculation of grades. 6. Students who are absent for more than 4 lab sessions during the semester for any reason (documented or not) cannot receive a passing grade in B IO 121. If you find yourself in this situation, or close to it, you should meet with Dr. Wiles or Bev Werner as soon as possible. 7. Students will be held responsible on weekly quizzes for content knowledge of material presented in labs, whether they are present or not, and for all lab sessions on the Final Laboratory Practical Exam. Lab documents are available on Blackboard until the end of the semester. 8. Late policy: Be on time for lab class. This is especially important since there are points that cannot be recovered if you are late. No late assignments will be accepted. 9. Electronic Devices: Use of electronic devices, including cell phones, during any part of lab class is not allowed. We expect you to be engaged in the tasks at hand at all times. Accessing non-course related websites, email, texting or any related activities can in no way be construed as participation or working toward satisfactory completion of lab activities. Therefore, any such activity will result in the loss of ALL participation credit for the entire session (8 points), and may well result in further grade penalties and/or exclusion from the lab. 10. Checking Grades: You will have two BIO 121 Bb areas – one for lecture and one for lab. Lab documents will be obtained through the Lab Documents button of Bb at “BIO.121.Merged.FALL19.General Biology I”; this is also where you will check your grades for exams, lecture participation and extra credit. The Bb link that contains your lab section number, M003 through M036, is where you will check your lab grades. *ACCEPTED DOCUMENTED REASONS: 1. ILLNESS: An absence due to illness requires written confirmation that the student was seen at a health care provider. Excuses for lab absences for medical reasons (illness) will be given only if such absences are advised by a health care provider at the SU Health Center (with notification through Orange Success, via the Office of Student Assistance http://studentassistance.syr.edu) or other medical facility, based on clinical findings and prescribed treatment recommendations. For complete details on the SU Health Services Absence Notification Policy see here: https://ese.syr.edu/bewell/

8

BIO 121 SYLLABUS – FALL 2019 All other forms of health related absence documentation must be submitted in person to Bev Werner in LSC 142; notes sent by email – pictures or scanned copies – must be presented in person to verify such items. 2. DEATH IN THE FAMILY: An absence due to the death of a relative requires the confirmation of the funeral or memorial event via the presentation of a memorial card, newspaper obituary/notice, link to online item, or notification through SU Office of Student Assistance. 3. RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE: See policy at the following link. Note that notification must be entered into MySlice before the end of the second week of classes of the semester. https://policies.syr.edu/policies/university-governance-ethics-integrity-andlegal-compliance/religious-observancespolicy/?_ga=2.128337098.758265248.1535058228-536004855.1484058627 4. Documented absence paperwork should be submitted to Bev Werner’s office within 2 weeks of the absence and no later than the last day of classes. Absence documentation will NOT be accepted after the last day of class of the semester. Contact Bev Werner if you have any questions regarding this. ATHLETIC EVENTS: • Athletic team travel letters should be submitted to BIO 121 Course Coordinator by email ([email protected]) or in person (LSC 142) before the end of ADD/DROP (September 3). • Student athletes should not assume that athletic activities, including practices, team travel, etc. are accepted documented reasons. • Any changes to athletic travel schedules after Add/Drop, as well as additional travel (due to tournaments, etc.), must be brought to the attention of Bev Werner as soon as possible. • You may need to enroll in an alternative lab section (for the entire semester) during which you will not have schedule conflicts.
