Assessment Task 1 Instructions Provide answers to all of the questions below:

1.

Discuss, in one paragraph, the concept of business ethics. Business ethics is the study of appropriate business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial subjects including corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities

2.

Discuss ethical leadership and its importance in supporting organisational values. To my understanding, ethical leadership is the ability of a leader to take responsibility of the company’s performance whether it may be good or bad. For a company to function as efficiently as it can be, however, the leader must also be able to promote this kind of behaviour to its members. An ethical leader must be capable of communicating the importance of the same standards and holding his/her employees to those benchmarks because only then will the whole team be able to fully manifest the company’s underlying values in or out of the workplace

3.

Discuss three characteristics of an ethical leader. Perhaps the most important characteristic of an ethical leader is the ability of having to take responsibility of his/her company. Given that any leader is the face of his/her company, he/she must be capable of shouldering any mistake or success his/her people no matter how major it may be. This will promote the value of accountability and honesty in the workplace. Another vital characteristic of any ethical leader is open-mindedness. An ethical leader must be able to have two-way conversations with his/her employees. This will promote innovation and an endless flow of new ideas within the company that will induce rapid and consistent growth in the long run. Finally, an ethical leader must be able to lead his/her company to a clear and definite purpose without exploiting his/her employees in any way. Being able to do this is critical for any business’ success because through this, the leader can efficiently connect the significance of their actions to one solid objective. This will ensure that the company’s efforts are always on track and as consistent as it can be

4.

Give, and explain, three benefits of ethical leadership. The most immediate benefit of having to exhibit ethical leadership is gaining the trust of the entire company. A trusted leader can effectively lead his/her troops into battle without the latter second-guessing anyone. Trust within the workplace promotes a productive and collaborative relationship between employer and employee, allowing anyone to divide the labor by relying on one another. Another benefit of having to exhibit ethical leadership is promoting inclusivity within the workplace. An ethical leader gives importance to every voice and opinion in the company, Southern Cross School of Business CRICOS Provider Code: 03523D | SCSBId: 41253 | ABN: 95155625924 Level 2, 1-3 Fitzwilliam Street PARAMATTA NSW 2150 | Ph: + 61 (2) 9633 3287 Level 3, 531 George Street, SYDNEY NSW 2000 | Ph: 61 (2) 8937 0506

Southern Cross School of Business CRICOS Provider Code: 03523D I SCSBID: 41253 | ABN: 95155625924 Level 2, 1-3 Fitzwilliam Street Parramatta NSW 2150 Level 3, 531 George Street, Sydney, NSW 2000 Ph: 61 (2) 8937 0506 & 9633 3287

which ultimately leads to diversity and innovation. Finally, an ethical leader will promote consistency in the workplace, whether may it be in terms of work habits or moral standards. A leader with a strong moral compass is capable of influencing his/her members to uphold and practice the same values and work ethics

5.

Discuss four (4) styles of leadership and the impact each of the identified styles on organisational culture. Democratic Leadership Democratic leadership is exactly what it sounds like -- the leader makes decisions based on the input of each team member. Although he or she makes the final call, each employee has an equal say on a project's direction. Democratic leadership is one of the most effective leadership styles because it allows lower-level employees to exercise authority they'll need to use wisely in future positions they might hold. It also resembles how decisions can be made in company board meetings. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leadership is the inverse of democratic leadership. In this leadership style, the leader mak decisions without taking input from anyone who reports to them. Employees are neither cons ered nor consulted prior to a direction, and are expected to adhere to the decision at a time and pace stipulated by the leader. Strategic Leadership Strategic leaders sit at the intersection between a company's main operations and its growth opportunities. He or she accepts the burden of executive interests while ensuring that current working conditions remain stable for everyone else. This is a desirable leadership style in many companies because strategic thinking supports multiple types of employees at once. However, leaders who operate this way can set a dangerous precedent with respect to how many people they can support at once, and what the best direction for the company really is if everyone is getting their way at all times

6.

Explain how a charismatic leader can assist in ensuring that a company’s vision is implemented. Charismatic leaders are the movers and shakers of the world, daring to challenge the status quo and empower their followers to perform beyond normal expectations. Charismatic leaders transform their followers to make personal sacrifices for the sake of the collective and to become involved in the leader’s vision and mission.

7.

Discuss at least three strategies that can be used to encourage employee participation in decision-making.
